Metro officials said Thursday that computer-driven trains will return to the Red Line during rush hours on Monday, nearly six years after the system failed catastrophically, resulting in a crash that killed nine people.

.

The return to automatic train operation (ATO), under which train operators open and close doors and make announcements but the computers do the driving, comes after $18 million in engineering work. Initially, it will resume only on eight-car trains during peak travel times.

.

The practice was halted throughout the Metro system after the 2009 Red Line crash, in which a computer-driven train near the Fort Totten station plowed into a stopped train at an estimated 49 mph. The disaster, the worst in the agencys history, resulted from a failure of the ATO system.Since then, humans have been doing the driving with human imprecision and passengers have grown weary of the lurching stops and starts and the less-than-optimal spacing of trains, which causes delays. In addition to offering smoother rides, Metro said, resuming ATO will save money for the agency by using electricity more efficiently.

.

I want to thank our riders for their forbearance through years of work, often on weekends, to allow us the track access necessary to perform essential signal upgrades, Deputy General Manager Rob Troup said. He called the return of ATO a significant safety milestone for the nations second-busiest subway.

.

The announcement a rare upbeat moment for Metro in recent months came as members of the board of directors met to discuss a range of ongoing problems, including the agencys financial woes and its search for a new general manager, which has been hampered by internal disputes over the type of chief executive Metro needs.

.

Troup said six-car trains will continue running in manual mode until a computer software upgrade is completed late this year. After that, every Red Line train will be computer-driven. Metro anticipates ATO being operational on its five other subway lines by the end of the 2017, at a cost of an additional $33 million.
