PHILADELPHIA (CBS) Riders will have their commute affected Monday after cracks were found in SEPTAs Market-Frankford Line cars. Two SEPTA Market Frankford cars have been taken out of service this weekend after cracks were found.

.

Beginning Monday morning, between 30-40 more will be removed, SEPTA officials tell us this is for safety reasons.

.

SEPTA officials say about one-third of its fleet will be taken out of service Monday.

.

SEPTA will hold a press conference updating the situation Monday at 1:00 p.m.

.

SEPTAs Carla Showell-Lee said they are working to make this inconvenience as smooth as possible for riders.

.

People should know that the Market Frankford Line trains will continue to operate between 69th Street Transportation Center and the Frankford Transportation Center, she said. Were gonna have shuttle buses, about 60 out there between the peak hours of 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. and then 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. at select stations.

SEPTA TRANSPORTATION ALERT

Market-Frankford Line
SERVICE ADVISORY | Market Frankford Line - Supplemental Bus Service: Adjustments to the Market Frankford Line will be in effect beginning Monday, February 6, 2017. Visit the Market Frankford Line Supplemental Bus Service page for additional information

The Market-Frankford Line runs as Night Owl bus service between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Board buses on street level at designated Market-Frankford Line Night Owl bus stops.

Effective Monday, February 6, 2017

.

A crack in a body bolster (a main load carrying structural beam) was uncovered this weekend on one Market Frankford Line car undergoing a scheduled vehicle overhaul. Subsequent inspections revealed an additional car with a crack. In the interest of safety, we took a proactive measure to temporarily pull from service some of the fleet that have indications of a crack. All Market Frankford Line trains currently in service and those that will be in operation on Monday have been inspected. Having taken this step, adjustments to Market Frankford Line service will be made beginning with Monday, February 6, 2017.

.

Market Frankford Line trains will continue in operation between 69th Street Transportation Center and Frankford Transportation Center and will make stops but we will be 30-40 cars short of the 144 needed to run regular, weekday peak hour service levels.

.

During AM and PM peak travel hours we anticipate the trains and platforms will become very crowded. To ensure the safety of customers we will supplement Market Frankford service with shuttle buses, serving select stations, during the AM Peak - 6:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. and PM Peak - 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. (see details below).

.

SEPTA will have personnel at each station, during the hours noted above, monitoring crowding conditions. They will determine if customers can be directed to the train platform or to the shuttle bus but we ask you to be prepared to use a shuttle bus if you are traveling from one of the stations noted below.

.

This remains a fluid situation and we will continue to keep you updated on any service changes and the work to return cars to the fleet.
