When my friend Rick Geho suggested to me some time back that Allentown needed and deserved a downtown trolley line, I dismissed the thought as wishful thinking. Later information that has come to my attention indicates that Rick was probably right.

.

Recently, while catching up with my reading, I came across my National Railway Historical Society Bulletin, dated Fall 2013. It was obvious the newsletter of 38 pages primarily dealt with trolley cars. The heading of the newsletter was "The Modern Streetcar Transit or Time Machine?" I turned a page to find that 19 American communities are welcoming back trolley service to serve their citizens. The most interesting part of the article carried the subhead, "Guide to Current Modern Streetcar Projects."

.

Reading on, I learned that modern trolley lines are operating in Portland, Ore., and in Tacoma and Seattle, Wash. The next section, "Under Construction," listed these forward-thinking communities: Tuscon, Ariz.; Washington, D.C.; Cincinnati; Atlanta; Salt Lake City, Utah; Dallas; and Charlotte, S.C.

.

Another section listed these cities as funded for trolley service: Arlington, Va.; Oklahoma City; and Los Angeles. Finally, the article describes six more cities with planned trolley systems: Minneapolis; Sacramento, Calif.; Milwaukee; Kansas City, Kansas; Detroit; and Tempe, Ariz.

.

Alexander Craghead, writing in the National Railway Historical Society Bulletin, explained, "The Seattle Streetcar was constructed primarily using funds from a special taxing district on properties along its route. The final cost was $56.4 million, including the cost of the cars." In Cincinnati, he reported, "The $125 million line is being funded with a mixture of local revenues and $39.9 million in federal grants."

.

Some say the return of trolley cars is simply a nostalgic return to the historic streetcar era. Craghead notes, "What is of little doubt is that the modern streetcar of today is not a repetition of the past."
