Japan boasts the fastest passenger
train in the world and its new Maglev
train managed to break its own speed
record this week. The hi-tech train,
which uses magnets to move while hovering
over the tracks, hopes to cover more than
400km in just one hour.

.

In comparison, Australia’s own XPT service
barely exceeds 80km/h during its 11 hour
trip from Sydney to Melbourne, a journey
of about 900km.

.

Gerard Drew, co-author of the report Zero
Carbon Australia High Speed Rail, said the
difference in speeds was “kind of embarrassing”,
and train travel in Australia felt “antiquated”.

.

While the new Maglev train is not yet
operational in Japan, the country hopes
to have a link between Osaka and Tokyo up
and running by the late 2020s.

.

Mr Drew said Japan’s current Shinkansen high
speed train system was already at capacity
and this was driving the development of the
new hi-tech rail line, which is expected to
cut a three-hour journey to one hour.

.

Costing $76 billion, the 410km link is very
expensive and Mr Drew said it was unlikely
Australia would adopt the technology anytime
soon.

.

But Mr Drew believes that high-speed rail
should play a part in Australia’s future,
especially now that the mining boom is
slowing down, which should also bring
construction costs down.
