It's been decades since either passenger or freight trains negotiated the
treacherous climb up the nation's steepest standard-rail tracks - a
three-mile stretch with 50 curves notorious for runaway trains that
claimed 27lives of brakemen and other workers over the years.
.
Now Jones and other Saluda natives and residents hope history can boost
the town's fortunes by turning downtown's oldest surviving building - the
train depot - into a museum.

.
The rail followed paths used to bring livestock from Tennessee down into
South Carolina. The railroad was built with convict labor, authorized by
the North Carolina General Assembly.
.
The first train from Spartanburg stopped in what would become Saluda on
July 4, 1878. It took another year to lay the track over into
Hendersonville. In the meantime, visitors began building summer homes.
.
"Saluda was the first station on the mountain to get the tourist trade,"
Jones said.
.
They kept coming. Where the rich plantation owners had once taken wagons
and households up to Flat Rock to escape the Low Country heat, now even
more people from South Carolina, Georgia, even Alabama and Mississippi,
were riding the trains up into the Blue Ridge Mountains.
.
With only about 500 year-round residents, Saluda swelled to about 2,500
souls each summer.
