Eight Amtrak Passengers Deaths Echo Across the Region and the World

Boarding the train in Washington, a commercial real estate broker texted
her mother: she was safely in her seat, she said, on her way home to
Manhattan. A businessman usually flew for work, but for this quick trip
the train seemed more convenient. A Wells Fargo executive had dropped
everything for his uncles funeral, but had to return to his job. An
Italian olive oil and wine salesman preferred to fly, but jumped on Amtrak
when his flight arrangements fell through.
.
And an educator with a lifelong passion for helping the children of his
native Bronx, hated flying. He was glad to be taking the train.
.
Amtraks Northeast Regional Train No. 188 carried them all. On Tuesday
night, the train derailed after speeding around a bend in the tracks in
Philadelphia, injuring more than 200 people and killing eight.
.
Some of the victims were identified on Wednesday, including Justin Zemser,
20, a midshipman at the Naval Academy; Rachel Jacobs, 39, the chief
executive of a Philadelphia education technology start-up; and Jim Gaines,
48, a video software architect for The Associated Press. By Thursday, more
families had had their worst fears confirmed.
.
As news of the derailment spread, Derrick Griffiths family and friends
held out hope that he would walk back into his office at Medgar Evers
College in Brooklyn, where he was the acting dean of student affairs and
enrollment management.
.
When he did not, the tributes began and quickly multiplied. Former
students of his at CUNY Prep, the alternative high school program he
founded and ran for eight years, exchanged stories on Facebook of how Mr.
G had changed their lives, pushing them out of troubled childhoods in the
Bronx and into college.
.
College friends remembered how he seemed to be everywhere at the
University of North Carolina at Charlotte, becoming the first
African-American student body president to serve two terms on the
majority-white campus. Medgar Everss president, Rudy Crew, recalled in a
news conference on Thursday how fluidly his colleague could switch from
street slang to academic formality, lacing it all with wit and a huge
smile.
.
And they all recalled the driving force of his life: Mr. Griffith, 42, who
was raised by an alcoholic single mother in the Bronx and had successfully
defended his Ph.D. dissertation on educating young black boys this spring,
was determined to help young people transcend their backgrounds, just as
he had.
.
All the while, he was raising his son as a single father and caring for
his mother, who eventually moved in with him in Brooklyn. He talked openly
to his teenage students about his impoverished childhood.
