<http://blog.al.com/live/2010/08/tourism_survey_paints_grim_pic.html>A new survey by a leading travel industry research firm paints a grim forecast for Gulf Coast tourism following the BP oil spill.
Share State and local tourism leaders, however, said the tourist trade is already rebounding along the coast and could be set for a full recovery by next spring.
The national survey by San Francisco-based Destination Analysts Inc. found that one-third of Americans said the spill would affect the likelihood that they will travel to the Gulf Coast in the next year.
Of those respondents, about 80 percent said they were either less likely or much less likely to visit the region.
That is a troubling result for the industry along the Gulf Coast, but its not surprising because theres been so much coverage of the spill, said David Bratton, founder and managing partner of the research firm. The publicity has just been horrific.
Images of oiled birds and tar-soaked beaches were published around the world in the weeks after the April 20 explosion that started the spill. The disaster wiped out travel business for Gulf Coast communities at the peak of the summer tourist season.
