It engages the learner at a more personal level by addressing the needs and wants of the individual. Experiential learning requires qualities such as self-initiative and self-evaluation. For experiential learning to be truly effective, it should employ the whole learning wheel, from goal setting, to experimenting and observing, to reviewing, and finally action planning. This complete process allows one to learn new skills, new attitudes or even entirely new ways of thinking. Remember the games we use to play when we were kids? Simple games, such as hopscotch, can teach many valuable academic and social skills, like team management, communication, and leadership. The reason why games are popular as experiential learning techniques is because of the "fun factor" - learning through fun helps the learner to retain the lessons for a longer period. Most educators understand the important role experience plays in the learning process. A fun learning environment, with plenty of laughter and respect for the learner's abilities, also fosters an effective experiential learning environment. It is vital that the individual is encouraged to directly involve themselves in the experience, in order that they gain a better understanding of the new knowledge and retain the information for a longer time. As stated by the ancient Chinese philosopher, Confucius, "[t]ell me and I will forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I will understand." <snip> Experiential Learning in Tourism and Hospitality: A Selection of Sources Second-home Landscape: The Meaning(s) of Landscape for Second-home Tourism in Finnish Lakeland Pitknen, Kati Tourism Geographies May 2008 v. 10 no. 2 p. 169-192 Student-Led Presentations "in Situ": The Challenges to Presenting on the Edge of a Volcano Marvell, Alan Journal of Geography in Higher Education v. 32 no. 2 p. 321-335 May 2008 Critical Thinking is a Life Relevancy: A Hospitality Management Student Case Study Berger, Monica College and Undergraduate Libraries 2008 v. 15 no. 1 / 2 p. 127-140 Closing the Gap--between theory and practice in event management Lamb, David Australasian Parks and Leisure Autumn 2008 v. 11 no. 1 p. 28 Pedagogy of/as/and Tourism: Or, Shameful Lessons Werry, Margaret Review of Education, Pedagogy and Cultural Studies January 2008 v. 30 no. 1 p. 14-42 Out on the Floor: Experiential Learning and the Implications for the Preparation of Docents Grenier, Robin S.; Sheckley, Barry Journal of Museum Education v. 33 no. 1 p. 79-93 An Example of Collaboration on an Authentic Learning Project in Heritage Tourism: The Case of the Scots-Irish in North Carolina Deale, Cynthia S.
