Sutures vs Staples: Which Is Safer Following Orthopaedic Surgery? Albert B. Lowenfels, MD Authors and Disclosures Posted: 06/30/2010 Sutures Versus Staples for Skin Closure in Orthopaedic Surgery: Meta-analysis Smith TO, Sexton D, Mann C, Donell S BMJ. 2010;340:c1199 Summary Is it safer to use sutures or staples for skin closure after orthopaedic surgery? The authors performed a meta-analysis of reports published in the past 60 years and found that only 6 of 194 originally selected records were suitable for the analysis. The combined reports included 332 patients with suture closure of the wound and 351 patients with staple closure. Most of the studies were small, but none favored staple closure. The overall result favored suture closure because the risk for wound infection was more than 3-fold greater when staples were used (P = .01). http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/723977?src=mp <http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/ 723977?src=mp&spon=8&uac=53168PV> &spon=8&uac=53168PV Respectfully, Lisa Kuipers RN The Medical Detective lkmeddetective@xxxxxxxxxxx 661 266 2165 office 661 810 0523 cell .
