n one of the most disturbing youth sports incidents in recent years, coaches of a Sarasota, Fla., youth football team instigated a brawl with a referee which eventually led to the coaching staff and a player violently attacking the referee in question during a massive brawl which embroiled both teams.

.

As reported by Sarasota Patch, quickly followed by a variety of Tampa Bay news outlets, details of the incident were first gleaned from an amateur video of a game involving the Sarasota Gators and North Port Huskies on Saturday. The video was eventually turned over to the Sarasota Sheriff's office, which has since opened up a full criminal investigation into the proceedings from the game. While it's unknown whether charges will be filed against the coaches and player who attacked the referee, battery against a game official is classified as a felony in the state of Florida.

SARASOTA COUNTY - Three coaches and one player from the Sarasota Gators youth football team were charged Friday with felony counts of battery on a sports referee.

.

Sheriff Tom Knight announced Friday that the four of them: Dexter Austin, 43; Timothy Howard, 38; Antonio Bradley, 28 and 14-year-old Jamisen Saintvale were responsible for starting the brawl that was captured on video by a parent and has been aired countless times by TV stations across the country this week.

.

Knight said the only defendant who did not seem sorry about his role in the fight was the man who started it.

.

Dexter Austin, an assistant coach with the Gators, "doesn't seem to be too remorseful," Knight said.

.

Austin, who was apparently thrown out of the game for arguing a call, threw a plastic water bottle at the referee, Jayme Ream.

.

The video does not show who struck the first blow in the fight. Knight said it was Ream, but added that the referee had the right to defend himself after Austin threw the bottle and charged him.

.

"He was standing his ground," Knight said.

.

Ream, 41, suffered a fractured shoulder in the melee, according to the Sheriff's Office.

.

Knight said the incident highlights an ugly side of youth sports.

As many as four people caught on tape attacking a Florida youth football referee could face felony assault charges today, the Sarasota sheriff's office said.

.

Arrests will be announced at 1:15 p.m. Friday in the Aug. 27 brawl, the Sarasota Herald Tribune reported.

.

Assaulting a referee is a felony under state law, with a maximum of four years in prison.

.

The fight erupted after coaches overreacted to a disputed call at a game between the Sarasota Gators and the North Port Huskies.

.

A widely circulated video of the melee shows coaches from the Sarasota team first started throwing water bottles at referee Jayme Ream - and then an unidentified man is seen walking toward the ref.

.

Then, it turns into an all-out attack on Ream, who is seen being tackled and kicked.

.

"For adults who have been entrusted with mentoring the youth of our community, the actions displayed are beyond disappointing," Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight said in a statement. "The video speaks for itself."

Shocking video footage of High School football players attacking a referee during a mass brawl could lead to assault charges.

.

Police have confirmed they are investigating the alleged attack on a referee by at least one of the players.

.

They have called the attack 'disturbing' and warned that the players involved could face felony assault and battery charges.

.

The attack on the referee was filmed by a stunned parents from the stands who can be heard exclaiming 'Oh my God' as he is felled by one of the young players.

.

The mass brawl took place just before halftime of a game between the Sarasota Gators and the North Port Huskies at Riverview High School in Sarasota, Florida.

.

The players were 13 and 14 years old.

.

In the video the referee is seen fighting with another man, who appears to be a member of the Gators coaching staff.

.

As the man falls to his knees, another man who also appears to be a coach on the Gators staff is seen grabbing the referee and pulling him away.

.

A third member of the staff then tries to confront the referee, and a youth in a green shirt takes a swing at the referee.

.

When the referee starts to run away a Gators football player runs at him at full speed, wraps his arms around him and slams him to the ground.

.

The player hops next to the referee as if egging him on to get up and fight.

SARASOTA - The two coaches at the center of last weekend's youth football brawl are brothers Dexter Austin and Eddie Austin, longtime Sarasota residents who are grieving the recent loss of their mother, Elizabeth C. Austin.

.

Dexter Austin, 43, is an assistant coach with the Sarasota Gators who started the fight when he shouted at a referee and then ran after him, an official from the Mid-Florida Football and Cheerleading Conference confirmed today.

.

Eddie Austin, 35, is the head coach of the team and president of the Gators. He can be seen on the video trying to break it up.

.

"I feel for the guys because I personally know them," said Michael Wilson, executive vice president of the league. "Their mother passed away the week prior. Maybe people will understand that. I don't think they were in the right frame of mind when they were on the field.

.

"There's a lot of stress that goes on in the beginning of the season. And these coaches had to coach in the morning and go to their mom's funeral in the afternoon the prior week."

.

Wilson said that before last Saturday's brawl captured on video by a parent and now making national headlines, the league had no hint of trouble from the Sarasota Gators, who entered the Mid-Florida conference in 2009.

.

snip

.

Now their team has been disbanded. The Sheriff's Office plans to announce criminal charges against as many as four people affiliated with the Gators this afternoon.

.

"We are a zero tolerance league, and we threw out their entire organization," Wilson said. "Unfortunately, we had to."
