DANBURY -- Hitched to Bill Romaniello's brick red pickup is the future of
sports medicine as Greater Danbury will know it, an 8 1/2-foot wide,
9-foot tall, 18 1/2-foot long trailer designed to drag area sporting
events out of the dark ages and into the class of care afforded major
Division I programs and big league franchises.

"This" is a game-changer, a "sports medicine facility on wheels" according
to Romaniello that was inspired by a similar unit he and Day came across.
The difference is the Specialist in Performance, Orthopedics,
Rehabilitation, Training and Strength (an acronym Romaniello came up with)
Safety Mobile took the concept of a portable athletic training center to
new and innovative heights.

"It gives us the ability (to treat an injury) in an enclosed environment
off the field," Romaniello, a native of New Milford, said. "If you have a
serious injury you're treating, you have a place to go, to shield an
athlete from the elements."

And prevention is also a major component of Day and Romaniello's creation,
which came together in about six weeks when the idea was brought before
Joe Virag at the Ridgefield-based Gryphon Trailers, a company that
specializes in customizing cargo trailers for use by dog groomers and
tailgaters.

The S.P.O.R.T.S. Safety Mobile is an air-conditioned unit that includes
three foldable tables that can be used by doctors, trainers and
chiropractors, a 42-inch, wall-mounted flat screen TV, and room enough for
a golf cart for transporting athletes.

S.P.O.R.T.S. is only part of a larger effort by Romaniello and Day to
engulf the area's professional and amateur sports teams in the kind of
extensive coverage that was the envy of the Whalers' opponents in the
Federal Hockey League throughout last year's inaugural season.

Romaniello refers to the world class treatment of elite collegiate and
professional sports teams as "the Olympic model." He and Day didn't see
why it couldn't be introduced at the community level.

"We thought, `Let's bring (the Olympic model) to Danbury,'" Romaniello
said. "Why shouldn't the Danbury Trojans (pop warner football team) have
that. Why shouldn't soccer tournaments have that."
