ONE quarter of children are above the healthy weight, according to the
latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures.
.
The worrying increase in children above the healthy weight for their age
prompted Queensland University of Technology (QUT) to launch the
Parenting, Eating and Activity for Child Health (PEACH) program in 2013.
.
Children aged five to 11, whose weight is above a healthy range, are
eligible for the government-funded six-month course, which teaches
families about healthy eating and physical activity.

.
QUT head of exercise and nutrition sciences school, Professor Lynne
Daniels, said acknowledging their child was overweight and figuring out
what to do about it could be quite confronting for parents.
.
Dietitian Emma Esdaile, who had run the program in North Lakes in the
past, said the goal was not all about weight loss.
.
Because children are still growing, actual weight loss is not a focus of
this program, but when parents engage with PEACH they can expect to see
their children grow and develop in a healthier way (and) parents will feel
more confident making healthy choices for their family, she said.

.
Taking public transportation has been shown by research to be one
important factor in weight reduction as one must travel to the train,
streetcar or bus.
