UPRISING IN SYRIA: One day after a violent
government crackdown in two southern towns,
Syrian security forces have arrested at least
500 pro-democracy activists, Al Jazeera
English reported

2011/04/20114265855623958.html).

.

Witnesses and activists posted videos on social
media networks yesterday that they claimed
showed Syrian troops in tanks and armored
vehicles opening fire on civilians in the town
of Deraa. According to Syrian rights group
Sawasiah, up to 20 civilians may have been
killed, but those figures could not be verified
due to a government-ordered ban on nearly all
foreign media coverage. The government claims
the army was invited to rid the town of gunmen.

On Monday, the U.S. State Department told American
citizens to leave Syria and ordered some personnel
at the U.S Embassy in Damascus to depart from the
country, MSNBC reported

.

The Obama administration is also considering
"targeted sanctions" against Syria, including
a freeze on assets and a ban on U.S. business
dealings.

.

At the time of this writing, more than 350
people are believed to have died in the
five-week uprising against President Bashar
Assad's authoritarian regime.

DOMA DEFENDERS BOW OUT: King & Spalding, the
126-year-old Atlanta law firm hired by
Republicans in the House of Representatives to
defend the constitutionality of the Defense of
Marriage Act withdrew from the case on Monday,
The New York Times reported

us/politics/26marriage.html

.

The firm's chairman, Robert D. Hays Jr., said
he takes full responsibility for the decision,
which could cost the firm $500,000 in legal
fees. "In reviewing this assignment further,
I determined that the process used for vetting
this engagement was inadequate. Ultimately I am
responsible for any mistakes that occurred and
apologize for the challenges this may have
created," Hays said. The law prohibits federal
recognition of same-sex marriages, even in states
where such unions are legal.
