Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez, a Cuban defector who swiftly became one
of the brightest young stars in baseball, died early Sunday following a
boating accident according to several reports. He was 24.

The Marlins canceled Sundays scheduled game against the Atlanta Braves.

The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose
Fernandez, the club said in a statement. Our thoughts and prayers are with
his family at this very difficult time.

The Associated Press reported that the U.S. Coast guard said Fernandez was
one of three people killed in an accident in Miami Beach. Details werent
immediately available, but the incident is believed to have occurred
around 3 a.m. EDT, involving a 30-foot boat. According to the Miami
Herald, emergency workers continued to search for more victims near
Government Cut and South Pointe Park.

They found a boat that was up against the jetties, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue
Chief Todd Garofalo told WSVN. They did do an initial search and they
found three victims two on top of the water, one underneath the boat and
they had unfortunately passed away.

Fernandezs death shook baseball as it heads into the final week of the
regular season. Several clubs, including the Washington Nationals, issued
statements offering the Marlins condolences.

Marlins pitcher JosFerndez, Commissioner Robert Manfred said in a
statement. He was one of our games great young stars who made a dramatic
impact on and off the field since his debut in 2013. Our thoughts and
prayers are with his family, the Miami Marlins organization and all of the
people he touched in his life.

Current and former players also took to social media in an effort to
convey the young stars love for both his craft and the competition.

Jose Fernandez is one of the most genuine guys Ive ever played with,
retired pitcher Dan Haren, briefly a teammate with Fernandez in Miami,
tweeted Sunday morning. He loved life, he loved baseball. . [H]e will be
missed dearly.

Fernandez made his major league debut only three years ago, but he
immediately made an impact on the game both with his electric repertoire
of pitches and his effervescent personality. As a rookie in 2013, he
became an all-star, and was immediately identified not just as part of the
Marlins promising young core joining slugger Giancarlo Stanton and others
but as a player who could become a central character for his sport over
the course of a generation.

Fernandez owned a high-90s fastball and a devastating slider that he mixed
with a changeup and occasional curveball. The combination could be nearly
unhittable, and he combined them with a competitive swagger that could be
imposing. Several opposing players and executives said, over the course of
his career, that Fernandez was the one pitcher they would least like to
face in a crucial game.

Jose D. Fernandez (July 31, 1992 September 25, 2016) was a Cuban American
professional baseball pitcher who played for the Miami Marlins of Major
League Baseball (MLB).

Ferndez was born in Santa Clara, Cuba and made three unsuccessful attempts
at defecting before he was successful in 2008. He enrolled at Braulio
Alonso High School in Tampa, Florida and was selected by the Marlins in
the first round of the 2011 MLB draft. Ferndez made his MLB debut with the
Marlins on April 7, 2013. He was named to the 2013 MLB All-Star Game and
won the National League (NL) Rookie of the Month Award in July and August.
After the season, he won the NL Rookie of the Year Award and finished
third in Cy Young Award balloting.

Ferndez became the first pitcher in the modern era to win his first 17
career home decisions, as well as go 24-1 in his first 25 home decisions.
He was considered to be one of the top pitchers in the MLB at the time of
his death.

Early life

Jose Fernandez grew up in Santa Clara, Cuba. There, he lived on the same
street as, and was friends with, future Major League Baseball (MLB)
shortstop Aledmys Dz.[2] They played for the same youth baseball team, and
Dz's father and uncle encouraged Ferndez's mother to bring him to the
ballpark. Ferndez commented that had Dz's uncle not been an influence
early in his life, he would not have pursued a professional baseball
career. As major leaguers, they faced each other for the first time
professionally on July 28, 2016. In his first at-bat, Dz hit a home run
off Ferndez.[3][4]
Ram Jimez, Fernandez's stepfather, defected from Cuba in 2005, settling in
Tampa, Florida. Ferndez attempted to defect unsuccessfully three times,
with each failed defection attempt followed by a prison term. Fernandez,
along with his mother and sister, defected in 2007. On that successful
attempt, Joss mother fell overboard when the boat hit turbulent waters,
and Joshad to dive into the water to save his mother's life.[5]
Knowing Orlando Chinea, a coach who had trained some of Cuba's top
pitchers before he defected from Cuba, lived in the area, Jimez had his
son train with Chinea.[6] He attended Braulio Alonso High School in Tampa,
Florida.[7] Playing on the high school baseball team, Ferndez was part of
the Florida Class 6A state champions in his sophomore and senior
seasons.[8] Before his senior year in 2011, the Florida High School
Athletic Association ruled that Ferndez was ineligible, as he entered the
ninth grade while in Cuba in 2006 and had therefore exhausted his
eligibility. The Cincinnati Reds of Major League Baseball (MLB) were
prepared to sign Ferndez as an international free agent to a $1.3 million
signing bonus. Fernandez won an appeal and was declared eligible for his
senior year, ending Cincinnati's pursuit.[9] As a senior, Ferndez pitched
to a 13-1 win-loss record with a 2.35 earned run average (ERA) and 134
strikeouts. He also threw two no-hitters.[8]

Chief Petty Officer Nyxolyno Cangemi told The Associated Press that a
Coast Guard patrol spotted an overturned boat at 3:30 a.m. on a jetty near
Government Cut, Florida. The bodies were discovered a short time later.

Fernandezs backstory was one from a baseball fairy tale. As a teenager, he
was jailed for trying to defect from Cuba. He finally made it on his
fourth attempt, at age 15 in 2008, and saved his mother from drowning when
she fell overboard on their way to Mexico.

He emerged as a baseball star at Braulio Alonso High School in Tampa,
Fla., and was chosen 14th overall by the Marlins in the 2011 draft. He
signed for $2 million and was in the majors by 2013. Fernandez had never
pitched above Class A, but he made the All-Star team and was named
National League Rookie of the Year.

In fact, Fernandez would probably still be in Cuba if not for a
professional setback suffered by Jimenez. He was denied the opportunity to
leave the country for a medical mission in Venezuela because the
government deemed him a risk to defect. Until then, he says, we had no
reason to ever want to leave Cuba, to ever even think about it. But that
was a reminder. When youre there, its like youre in prison. I had to
leave. So he would defect first, Jimenez planned, and then he would save
enough money to have his children join him.

Everyone in Cuba, Jimenez says, knows someone who knows someone who
traffics defectors. If you want to escape, then you make a few calls,
maybe hold a few meetings, pay somewhere between $500 and $10,000
(Fernandez says his defection cost about a grand), and the next thing you
know, youre on your way to a boat. But thats the easy part. Most would-be
defectors get caught, and generally, those are the lucky ones. Many Cubans
refer to the stretch of water between Havana and Miami as the Caribbeans
largest cemetery. If the current doesnt get you, then theres always the
threat of a leaky boat, a soldiers bullet, or, in some cases, an
aggressive shark.

Jimenez took his chances. Thirteen times, he failed. Usually, their boat
never made it into the water. His group would approach the beach and wait
for their ride, but as soon as the boat arrived, one member of the group
an undercover agent would make a call. Police would arrive. If Jimenez
and the others were lucky, they would go home. If not, theyd end up in
jail.

Eventually, however, Jimenez noticed a pattern. The undercover agent would
typically wait until the defectors made their final call the one
coordinating the exact time of pickup and then initiate the bust. That
way, when the boat arrived, police could arrest all parties involved. If a
group could keep their pickup time a secret, he thought, then they could
escape before the police arrived. Jimenez changed his approach. Instead of
waiting on dry land, he and his group spent hours sitting in the water.
The undercover agent, if one was present, had no choice but to follow.
Only now the defectors left a coconspirator back on the beach with a cell
phone, which he used to coordinate the pickup. Their arrangements could no
longer be overheard. No one knew when the boat would arrive not Jimenez,
not his fellow defectors, and not anyone from law enforcement who might
have infiltrated the group. They stood in the sea, heads just above the
water. They waited. When the boat arrived, they hopped aboard. If an agent
were around, hed have no chance to call for help. By the time he returned
to dry land to get his phone, the defectors would be gone.

Once Jimenez made it to Florida, he settled in Tampa. First, he worked at
the airport, washing cars. But soon enough he found a job in the medical
field, and he saved enough money to begin sending for his family members.
Jose was a teenager by then, just a few years away from being enlisted in
Cubas compulsory military service. He was also a pitcher with a decent
fastball, and the more he talked to Jimenez, the more he fantasized about
life in the United States. By age 14, he and his mother decided to defect.

Three times, they set off for Miami. Three times, they failed. Fernandez
spent a few months in a Cuban prison, an attempted defector surrounded by
murderers, a 14-year-old boy locked up with grown men. He doesnt ever want
to think about the food again I have no idea how I would even describe it
in English, he says, but believe me, you dont want to know. He tries not
to remember all those bodies cramped into so little space. And he doesnt
let his mind dwell on the inmate killings. To them, their lives were
already over, Fernandez says. What did it matter to them if they killed
you? Thats just one more murder.

After Fernandez was released from prison, at age 15 he and his mother
planned another attempt. This time, instead of leaving from the north to
Miami for decades the expressway for Cuban defectors they would travel
south to the province of Sancti Spiritus and depart from a beach near the
city of Trinidad. Instead of heading to the United States, they would
arrive in Cancun. The alternate route was longer but more lightly policed.
The seas were rougher, but there would be no threat of seeing lights from
the Coast Guard. In Trinidad, Jose and his mother, Maritza, met his
stepsister Yadenis and her mother, as well as eight other hopeful
escapees.

Along the northerly route to Miami, there will sometimes be dozens or even
hundreds of potential defectors, all lurking by the beach and waiting for
boats. But here in the south, Fernandezs group was alone. It was near
midnight and the rain fell cool and steady and they scrambled for cover
near the water until they found a cave. They dropped down inside and
huddled together, their feet battered and bloody from the sharp rocks
inside the cave. Nearby was a lighthouse, manned by police they assumed
were watching for defectors. We thought, Theyll never suspect us here,
Fernandez says. No one would be crazy enough to do this so close to the
lookout. When the light beamed in their direction, they ducked. When it
passed, they allowed themselves to stand.

reprimanded him for talking during a test. He knew so few English words,
and only the bad ones, so he called her a bitch and got kicked out.

Baseball was the bridge. Ferndez told the coaches he was pretty good in
Cuba. Yeah, right, they sniffed; all the new kids say that. They put him
in the least-impressive group to try out. He was insulted by that. But
then he picked up a baseball ... and so much of the confusion evaporated
on the spot.

Everything changed then. Before that, no one wanted to talk to me, Ferndez
said. Then they saw me playing and everyone wanted to talk to me ... and
tried to speak Spanish. ...Girls would come up to me. I dont like popular.
I like low-key, humble. But popular is a lot better than lost.

Next thing you know, at lunch, 20 and 30 kids were gathered around
Fernandezs table, having learned how to play dominoes. Ferndez helped
Tampa
Alonso High School win two state championships.

He was throwing 94 in the championship game as a sophomore, Faedo said.
That was up from 84-86.

The explanation for the increased velocity?

He had more food here than there, the coach said. And he put on weight
because he wasnt going everywhere by foot.

Fernandezs is a uniquely Miami story, from rags to pitches, with an arm
strong enough to pull back in even a scarred and betrayed fan base that
keeps getting reasons to pull away. Humble and charismatic, with a childs
enthusiasm for joy, he is the only Marlins representative at the All-Star
Game tonight, talking through a smile in the kind of accent that surrounds
his home ballpark in Little Havana, and with a similar immigrant story.

To appreciate how strange things have gotten, it's worth reviewing the
events of the past two weeks. Fernandez left his May 9 start against the
Padres after his velocity had taken an alarming dip over his final
inning-plus of work. Initially, the Marlins believed that the falloff was
attributable to an upset stomach, but an MRI taken in Los Angeles on May
12 under the care of Dodgers team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache revealed
Fernandez's ulnar collateral ligament sprain. The following day, he
received a second opinion from team physician Lee Kaplan that confirmed
everyone's worst fears: His UCL was damaged enough to require the
season-ending surgery. He went under the knife that Friday.

Up to that point, the story is all too routine, but later that day, his
attorney, Ralph Fernandez (no relation), took the unusual step of
releasing a statement that traced the pitcher's problem to his May 4 start
against the Dodgers:

Because the boat was on a jetty, the Coast Guard notified Miami-Dade
police, which turned the investigation over to the Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Fernandez was on a 32-foot vessel that had a "severe impact" with a
jetty, said FWC's Lorenzo Veloz. The overturned boat remained in the
water Sunday morning, its engine partially submerged as its nose pointed
skyward, as debris from the crash was scattered over some of the large
jagged rocks.

"Jose was a remarkable young man and a tremendously gifted athlete, who,
at just 24, established himself as one of the game's biggest and brightest
stars," said Tony Clark, the executive director of the Major League
Baseball Players Association. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jose's

in the United States and Latin America."

The Miami Dolphins said they would have a moment of silence before their
game in nearby Miami Gardens on Sunday afternoon to remember Fernandez.

City of Miami Fire-Rescue workers were seen carrying bodies, draped and on
stretchers, at the Coast Guard station after sunrise Sunday. Officials
later said they were taken to the medical examiner's office. Two bodies
were found under the vessel and a third was found on the jetty, said Capt.
Leonel Reyes of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's Marine Services Bureau.

The names of the other two individuals are being withheld pending
notification of relatives, the Coast Guard said.

"It does appear that speed was involved due to the impact and the severity
of it," said Veloz, the FWC spokesman. "It does appear to be that they
were coming at full speed when they encountered the jetty, and the
accident happened."
