Marta Teegan is in the midst of whipping up apricot jam. The fruit is the
current farmers market star a voluptuous, perfectly ripe and seductive
mid-summer sweet and Teegan is gleefully having her way with it.

And she would know. Raised on a farm in the Caribbean and trained as a
master gardener and chef, Teegan worked in various restaurants before
founding L.A.'s Homegrown five years ago, where she creates edible gardens
for high profile clients and offers open classes on urban gardening and
cooking. Her first book, the aptly named Homegrown, was released by Rodale
this spring and details the best ways to grow in small spaces. In a town
of educated foodies, Teegan is the cream of the crop.
It's no surprise then that she would be inspired to fill the dearth of
fresh and local produce and organic foods in her own adopted neighborhood
of Echo Park. Alongside her partner, Robert Stelzner, Teegan is about to
cut the ribbon on Cookbook, the first greengrocer this side of La Brea.
Set to open in a space that formerly housed the urban jewelry store Han
Cholo, Cookbook will occupy a spot in the cluster of shops that anchors
the neighborhood's unique feel.
If you know Echo Park, you know Cookbook will not be your run-of-the-mill
grocer. Instead of a sprawling MegaMart run rampant with high fructose
corn syrups and artificial flavors, Cookbook will specialize in the food
Teegan and Stelzner love to eat: freshly picked, locally grown and, as
often as possible, organic.

We live in Echo Park and we wanted to do something in our own community,
Teegan explains. We wanted to offer our neighbors fresh, seasonal, organic
produce and foods and we also wanted to offer the farmers we knew another
outlet to sell in.
