Terrariums are coming back and they are coming with a vengeance. Just look
at gardening magazines and gardening columns in big city newspapers. Way
back in the 1990s, business writer John Naisbitt authored a book titled
Megatrends 2000, in which he outlined trends and predicted what the world
would be like 10 or 15 years hence. Sure, many of his predictions did not
come true, but an amazing number were right on. During the period when he
was really hot, I was able to attend one of his full-day seminars. It was
fascinating, and his methods were very simple.

Naisbitt would pick the subjects that he wanted to study and then began
tabulating the numbers. Using newspapers, hundreds of them from around the
world, he counted ad and article inches, books and even television
reports. He then began calculating, over a period of years, the direction
things were headed. I have, quite informally, tracked floral trends for
years and the most recent standout is terrariums. A lot is happening with
them.

Now, fast-forward to 2012! They are back. Basically, a terrarium is a
garden in a bottle. Ive seen them in mason jars (very miniature) and in
50-gallon aquariums. A few years ago, I had a dozen beautiful miniature
orchids in a large aquarium in my office.

Basically, you can take any glass container - a good place to start is
with one of our local aquarium suppliers; 10- and 20-gallon tanks are very
inexpensive place soil in the base and add a couple of plants. The soil
must be a good organic potting soil. When you remove it from the bag, soak
it in a pot of water for a short time to be sure it is saturated. Then
wring it out to get rid of all excess water. You might want to line the
lower part of the container with moss to give it a more professional look.
