Q.I have lots of success growing tropical plants indoors. My ti plants, however, are struggling. The edges of the leaves are turning brown, and eventually the whole leaf dies. One plant is dead; another is on its way. Please help.

.

A. Ti plants, draceanas, prayer plants and spider plants are sensitive to the chemicals in our tap water. This causes the leaf margins to turn brown. Try using distilled water, rainwater, melted snow or water collected from your dehumidifier when watering these plants, or keep the soil slightly moist to dilute the chemicals and minimize the damage.

.

This doesn't kill the plant, it just ruins its beauty. Check your declining plants for signs of root rot. Carefully slide the plant out of the container. Remove any slimy roots and repot in a container just slightly larger than the remaining root ball. Water your plants thoroughly and often enough to keep the soil just slightly moist. Pour off excess water that collects in the saucer, or elevate the pot above the water to further avoid root rot.
