CORPUS CHRISTI Rain has finally reappeared in the Coastal Bend and
gardeners have been rejoicing with relief from the drought and heat
brought by this much-needed precipitation.

One of the potential problems I frequently see when it does rain is
ritualistic movement of plants outside to enjoy the benefits of rainfall.
As soon as it starts to rain, plants almost magically appear outside homes
and offices in an attempt to provide the benefits of rain to potted
tropical plants that have been living inside.

Are you one of these rainy day plant movers? If so, you need to
re-evaluate this practice and weigh benefits against potential plant
risks.

The problem with taking plants into the rain is not related to the water,
but with the sun. You may be thinking, wait, there is no sun during a rain
shower. Actually, there may be more light than you think. First of all,
the intensity of sunlight is much greater outside than inside. Even on an
overcast day, there is probably more light than you think being absorbed
by plant leaves.

Chlororphyll doesn't have an on and off switch. It just absorbs light
whenever present. The problem occurs when the rain stops and the sun
quickly reappears. If your plants are still outside, they quickly will
fall victim to an overabundance of light.
