A shorter URL for the above link: <http://tinyurl.com/25dx8kq>Routines are crucial to a toddler's development. Toddlers THRIVE on routine, especially in a familiar environment (home). We all like to feel safe and loved (my husband slept with his baby pillow until a few months ago when I held it up and said, "It's time to let go"). Toddlers feel this way when you read them their favorite book and tuck them into their own beds to sleep.
Speaking of bed, my flower bed just told me that it feels neglected and wants to schedule a counseling session (freekin' LA... who doesn't go to counseling here?!). I know my husband watered the yard, but I don't think he spent too much time worrying about my plants (mon petit amis) as I do.
I also know that I forget to record television shows for him when he is away, so it evens out somehow. All my flowers need dead-heading, my tomatoes need new fences (you would think I gave them steroids), my vegetables need spraying (organic rosemary, garlic mix) and the whole place needs weeding. How in the world do I do all this with a toddler? Easy, I do it all the time.
Like every geeky Mom, I like to make ordinary daily activities fun learning experiences. Our children love to be outside (unless you are Colin Craven), and we can parlay that love into a green thumb. Redondo Beach is a terrific place to have a garden, as the climate provides an ideal setting for most plants (well... we can't grow good coffee here) to thrive. I have had terrific success this year with my plants and vegetables, and I can thank my toddler for helping me till the soil and water the roots.
