Although I might mention that Bruce Butterfield of the National Gardening Association says gardening was up 3 percent in 2012, gaining 3 million new gardeners in the year.

.

In all, gardening is getting earthier. Trending away from high-maintenance perennial gardens and English borders, gardeners are growing more food than flowers, and living the garden lifestyle rather than having a garden to look at. Easy care is trumping fussy, as far as plants go.

.

Balcony gardens and small outdoor rooms continue to attract new gardeners who don't wait for acreage to grow their own. Hipsters are growing cucumbers on the porch, and urban dwellers use vertical spaces where flat ground is not available.

.

Don't forget that millennials (18 to 34 age group) probably grew up with school gardens, and I suspect from the number of young garden bloggers out there, they continue to grow plants, if only on the kitchen table.

.

Anything edible is big. Not only growing your own food, but backyard farming from beekeeping to chicken coops to kitchen herbs. Edibles are not about saving money. Most people do this for the vine-ripened quality of the produce they plant.

.

Indoor gardening is making a bit of a comeback. Not so much with traditional houseplants, but with funky terrariums in all kinds of containers, small desk-size arrangements, orchids and other novelty plants.
