The beautifully manicured grounds of Stedman Community Hospice have
become a place of solace for residents and their families.
.
Soon they will be a place of healing and fellowship when the hospice
introduces a horticultural therapy program for St. Joseph Lifecare Centres
205 long-term care residents and hospice users.
.
Led by horticultural therapist Lynn Leach, the newly installed program,
said to be the first of its kind in the province, will help instill a
sense of peace and well-being through nature.

The first thing that we are trying to implement is a mens walking group,
Leach said.
.
It will be held one morning a week where men who have lost somebody go for
an hour-long walk, then come back for coffee, tea and maybe a talk. We are
specifically targeting men because we feel it is a population that has
difficulty opening up.
.
Walkers will likely begin and end their stroll in the lovely perennial
gardens that Leach created with staff and volunteers, including the
tireless efforts of Bill Chenoweth and Ruth Janiec.

Wed like to incorporate things like plant identification, bird watching,
those sorts of things along the walk to include a little bit of education
in horticulture too, Leach said.

Whether they are working in the garden, or just sitting and listening to
birds singing, there is a feeling of peace and serenity for those with a
love of nature.

During the winter months nature-related workshops and classes will be held
indoors. The courses will cover topics like indoor plants, medicinal
plants and flower arranging.
