By her own admission, Marguerite Potter has an obsession with moss. Its
what drew her away from making terrariums - tiny eco-systems that exist in
glass vessels - and towards kokedama, a traditional Japanese way of
exchanging a plant pot for a ball of moss and soil that is trussed
together with twine or fishing wire and, typically, strung up indoors.

You'd be forgiven for thinking it sounds complicated: Ive managed to keep
a maidenhair fern planted in a kokedama alive for just over six months and
I still eyeball it warily, convinced it may tire of its mossy prison and
give up and die at any time. But, despite being around for centuries in
Japan, where Potter lived for six years (although she only got into the
craft after leaving the country), kokedama have found new fans in the West
in recent years. Delicate and artful to look at, they pop up in fashion
editorial shoots and shopfronts - London department store Liberty string
them against their dark wooden staircases, although its worth noting that
the plants that emerge from them, at least, are plastic.

Because its a move away from planters, the upkeep is more inspiring -
theres a greater feeling that youre looking after this lovely living
thing. It will tell you if its not happy: if its too near light the leaves
will turn brown, it will thrive if its in the right place, and you can
move it around until it is.

She suggests newcomers start off with the soft, forgiving fronds of the
asparagus fern, which look particularly attractive coming out of a ball of
moss and grow quickly, so theyre very inspiring to keep. In fact, after
running a workshop with her colleagues at Westminster Council - all of
whom doubted their ability to keep a plant alive - the office is now
transformed with a collection of kokedama. It must be a home away from
home for Potter, who once had 30 hanging in her London home.

She stresses the benefits of making kokedama - so easy even children can
do it. They give a real, tactile connection with a plant: Theres a real
feeling of transplanting a plant from its original home, in a pot of soil,
as you carefully wash the soil off the roots and place it in new home. Its
a lovely thing to teach.
