VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) Each weekday, the mother and father come to the same
corner outside the county courthouse and spend hours camped out with
cardboard signs. As cars stream past, some drivers wave and honk. Others
occasionally shout jeers: "Go home!" or "Give it a rest!"
.
It's been a year since Kenneth and Jacquelyn Johnson's son was found dead
inside a rolled-up gym mat at his high school the victim, investigators
concluded, of a freak accident. Authorities determined 17-year-old
Kendrick Johnson fell head-first while reaching for a shoe and was
trapped. Almost a full day passed before his body was discovered.

The Johnsons, however, do not accept those findings. Their attorneys say
authorities may have covered up evidence that someone killed the teenager.
A grim post-mortem photo of his swollen, distorted face has been posted by
the family on protest signs and websites to help rally support for
reopening the investigation.

"My family won't be satisfied until someone is behind bars and someone is
convicted for what happened," says Kenneth Johnson, pacing the sidewalk
one Friday afternoon as his wife sat with her sister and mother. "Going
over it with common sense, how can it be an accident?"
.
He's not alone in wondering. Last month, about 200 people joined Johnson's
family outside the Georgia Capitol in Atlanta for a rally calling for
answers. The gathering was billed as: "Who Killed K.J.?"
.
Word has spread through social media, with one Facebook page "R.I.P.
Kendrick Johnson" drawing more than 25,000 followers. The Florida
attorney who represented Trayvon Martin's family took up the Johnsons'
cause in October, drawing more attention to the case. Now the U.S.
attorney for middle Georgia is conducting a formal review.

Perhaps it's the bizarre manner in which the teenager was found dead that
leaves some disbelieving. Or lingering doubts about how police in the
South treat cases involving black victims. Or that a grieving family
simply cannot come to terms with a tragic loss.

Johnson's supporters won't let his case be put to rest. But is there
evidence someone killed him?

For those inclined to reject the official findings, the case has its share
of stumbles and loose ends to fuel alternate theories.

The lack of camera footage showing Kendrick's last moments has been seized
on by family attorneys, who say they fear the footage was edited as part
of a cover-up. Images from the camera pointed toward the gym mats are also
blurred. School officials told investigators a basketball had knocked the
camera out of focus.

A paramedics' report noted bruising near Kendrick's right jaw, but no
bruises were mentioned in the autopsy report. Jones says the bruising was
likely discoloration caused by lividity, which occurs when the heart stops
pumping and blood settles in the body.

Investigators also waited to call the county coroner until six hours after
the body was found, though state law requires immediate notification. It
was standard practice in Lowndes County to process potential crime scenes
first, but that has since changed, Jones says. While critical of the
delay, the coroner agreed the death was accidental.

"At best it was incompetence," says Benjamin Crump, an attorney for the
Johnson family. "At worst it was some conspiracy to conceal the truth."

The complaint was filed with the Georgia State Board of Funeral Service
against Antonio Harrington, the owner of Harringtons Funeral Home in
Valdosta, on behalf of Jacquelyn and Kenneth Johnson.

A federal prosecutor announced in October he is reopening the case.

When a judge agreed to exhume Johnson's body over the summer, a private
pathologist not only determined he died of blunt force trauma to his neck,
but also that all of his internal organs, including his brain, were
missing and his body had been stuffed with newspaper.

The Georgia Secretary of State currently has an open investigation into
the funeral home that handled Johnsons remains.

The complaint filed Tuesday by Johnsons parents alleges Harrington, the
funeral home owner, misled us as to the condition of our sons body, and at
worst, is responsible for the removal and destruction of his organs, and,
thus, desecration of our sons body.

The complaint alleges that when confronted by Kenneth Johnson following
the second autopsy, Harrington said he believed one or two organs might
have been missing when the funeral home received the body. The complaint
goes on to say that in a letter to the Johnson familys attorney dated Oct.
4, 2013, Harrington said Johnsons organs were destroyed and discarded by
the prosector prior to the bodys arrival at the funeral home.

Compounding the family's suspicions was the nature of the gym videos.
They're jumpy, with students intermittently appearing and vanishing, and
they bear no obvious timestamps.

The Johnsons' attorneys were not shy in stating their suspicion that
someone could have tampered with the videos.
.
"They know their child did not climb into a wrestling mat, get stuck and
die. Where is that video?" Benjamin Crump asked.
.
Attorney Chevene King questioned why time codes weren't shown in the
videos.
.
"We don't have any time code with which to synchronize the events that are
shown in the video. ... Either the cameras did this on their own or a
human being interacted to make these cameras do these things," King said.
.
Crump further said the family believes someone "corrupted" the video.
.
Lowndes County Schools insists the video is "a raw feed with no edits,"
and the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office, which asserts Johnson
accidentally died while reaching for a shoe in one of the mats, says it
didn't edit any files, according to their lawyers.
.
CNN, which filed suit to secure access to the video, hired forensic video
analyst Grant Fredericks to analyze more than 290 hours of material from
all 35 cameras inside and outside of the gym. Fredericks is a U.S. Justice
Department consultant and contract instructor for the FBI National Academy
in Quantico, Virginia.

CNN also provided Fredericks and his company, the Spokane,
Washington-based Forensic Video Solutions, with hundreds more hours of
video from 31 cameras in other parts of Lowndes County High School.

Fredericks quickly knocked down the Johnsons' concerns -- they're all
easily explained, he said -- but his examination raised what could be
another mystery: at least an hour of missing video from all four cameras
inside the gym.

"Those files are not original files," Fredericks said. "They're not
something investigators should rely on for the truth of the video."

While stopping short of directly accusing authorities of deliberately
tampering with the evidence, King said problems with the surveillance are
only the latest in a series of oddities that have drawn national attention
to Johnson's death. His bloody body was found rolled up in a mat at
Lowndes High School on January 11.

A state medical examiner ruled his death accidental, despite evidence of a
neck injury found in a second autopsy conducted by a pathologist hired by
the family. His fingernails had been clipped, his clothes were missing and
his organs had been removed and replaced by newspaper.

"We have had what I think is a series of events that causes you to raise
the question, when does a coincidence stop being a coincidence," King told
reporters Wednesday in Valdosta, Georgia.

King demanded that authorities hand over originals of the surveillance
video showing time codes and other evidence that he said could show
whether the materials had been tampered with.

Elliott, the attorney for Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine, said that
his client has confirmed the video had not been altered or edited by
anyone within the sheriff's office. An attorney for the school likewise
said that what was provided to the sheriff's office was the raw feed with
no edits.

Kendrick's father, Kenneth Johnson, angrily demanded justice, calling
authorities corrupt and vowing the family will not stop until they get
answers to what happened to his son.

"The Lowndes County Sheriff's Department, the D.A.'s office, they convict
people all the time inside this courthouse," he said. "Should they not be
held responsible for the lies they are telling and for the corruption?"

The FBI is planning on taking hard drives from the Lowndes County High
School surveillance system, after a grand jury subpoena issued yesterday
allowed the move.

17-year-old Kendrick Johnson was found dead in the gym inside of a
rolled-up gym mat. Surveillance video was released last month, but the
footage left many, including the teen's parents, suspicious that parts had
been edited.

There are a set of underlying questions that demand better answers than we
have received so far, Warnock said, in an interview with BET.com. He went
to school with a book bag and ended the day in a body bag. And the
explanations defy common sense. His parents deserve better answers and we
as Americans deserve better answers.

Johnson, a student in Valdosta, Georgia, was found Jan. 11 stuck in an
upright mat propped behind the bleachers inside his high school gym. The
investigators in the local sheriffs office concluded that his death was
the result of a freak accident and ruled it as an accidental death. The
family is vehemently protesting that ruling.
.
"Clearly something has happened here that needs to be looked into more
deeply," said Andre Dickens, who was recently elected to the Atlanta City
Council, in an interview with BET.com.
.
This is a situation that should attract the attention of everyone in this
state, Dickens said. "Once again, the eyes of the nation are on the Deep
South for another tragedy dealing with the death of another young Black
man. This needs to change. We have to figure out how we better value life
and avoid these kinds of situations."

Benjamin Crump, the attorney for the Johnson family, said that they are
calling for a coroner's inquest, effectively opening a new investigation
after the one conducted by officials in Lowndes County.

The first investigation, he said, determined that Johnson suffocated while
trying to get a shoe that had dropped on a mat. A second autopsy revealed
that a number of Johnson's organs had been removed from his body, which
had been stuffed with newspapers.

"Were calling for a coroners inquest to get to the bottom of that happened
with this young man," said Crump, speaking with BET.com. Crump is also the
lawyer of the family of Trayvon Martin.
