(CBS) Have you ever gotten a prescription for cheesecake? How about pizzawith a side order of chocolate chip Rice Krispy cakes?

It's not usually what the doctor ordered, but for medical marijuanapatients the taste of "medicine" is getting increasingly sweet.

As of now, 14 states and the District of Columbia have legalized the useof medical marijuana, but growing and selling it is still a federaloffense.

So, those who sell medical marijuana are operating in a gray area, butthat hasn't stopped them from getting very creative.

Operators from Oregon to California are selling marijuana packed gourmetdesserts and even entire meals.



By now, the medical benefits of marijuana are well documented.

Studies have shown that pot is effective in reducing muscle spasmsassociated with multiple sclerosis and pain caused by certain neurologicalinjuries or illnesses. Other studies have shown that marijuana can helpwith muscle spasms and the pain associated with spinal cord injuries andAIDS.



Still, the drug isn't without risks.

In November, Arizona will vote on Proposition 203, the so-called medicalmarijuana initiative. As an anti-drug activist for 30 years, Ive watchedthe pro-legalization lobbies.

For many years, their strategy has been to legalize illicit drugs byclaiming theyre actually medications. Proposition 203 was designed by theMarijuana Policy Project, a group whose stated aim is to legalizemarijuana, and Proposition 203 will do just that.

Heres how it works. The law says only licensed physicians can recommendmarijuana, but in other states with similar laws a handful of doctorsfound they can get rich seeing people for as little as 5 minutes andhanding out marijuana cards to anyone who pays $150. These marijuanadoctors write almost all the marijuana recommendations. Legitimate doctorshardly write any.

Among serious illnesses that qualify for marijuana, the law includessevere and intractable pain. That can be anything, from a sprained ankleto an occasional headache. One woman got marijuana because her high heelshurt.

These laws encourage unscrupulous doctors and dishonest patients tocollude, and that collusion accounts for 98 percent of the medicalmarijuana prescribed. Few patients have serious illnesses like cancer,multiple sclerosis or glaucoma.

Basically, medical marijuana is nothing more than a back-door route tolegalization, and its not harmless. States with these laws have higherrates of both teenage drug use and traffic fatalities caused by marijuana.Worse, Proposition 203 says people cant be charged with DUI or fired fromtheir jobs for small amounts of marijuana in their blood streams. However,theres no definition of these small amounts, and you know their lobbyistswill fight any attempt to set the bar low. Do we really want doctors,teachers and truck drivers high on pot while working?
