Barge Strikes Tourist Boat in Philadelphia

A barge rammed into an amphibious tourist boat that had stalled on the
Delaware River in Philadelphia Wednesday afternoon, overturning the duck
boat and sending the 37 people aboard into the river, authorities said.
Two people were missing despite frantic rescue efforts, officials said.
Before the collision, a fire broke out on board the tourist boat, causing
it to shut down, Philadelphia Police commissioner Charles H. Ramsay said.
The boat was sitting in the water waiting for help, he said.
That was when the city-owned barge hauling sludge, pulled by a tugboat,
ran into tourist boat, and the duck boat sank, authorities said. State and
federal investigators are on their way to launch an investigation,
officials said, even as a search has begun for the submerged tourist
vessel. Officials said the barge was unmanned and unmotored.
Within minutes, several boats from the Coast Guard, Philadelphia police
and fire departments raced to rescue the passengers, plucking 35 within
the first hour of the accident, said Petty Officer Mike Lutz, a spokesman
for the Coast Guard in Atlantic City.
Commissioner Ramsay said the two people still unaccounted are a
16-year-old girl and a 20-year-old male. Nine others were being treated
for minor injuries.
This is a very serious situation, Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter
said. Were going to do everything we can to obviously get to the bottom of
it.
News footage from CBS 3-TV in Philadelphia showed people being scooped out
of the water and helped onto police boats.
