For Angelina Jolie, the scale and impact of the floods that have devastated Pakistan are apparent on the faces of those she meets.

She saw it in the eyes of a couple in their 70s a husband who served twice in the military and built his house by himself for his family, one they've lived in for nearly 40 years.

"The man spoke to the fact that he never felt in his lifetime he is ever going to be able to recuperate what he lost," Jolie told Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent. "That he would never have again nice things. He would never have a nice bed, a nice house. And she they lived in this place since 1972. And raised their children and their grandchildren there. In a moment, a few hours, it was completely gone."

Jolie spoke to Gupta during her fourth trip to Pakistan as a spokeswoman for the U.N. refugee agency to help bring awareness to the country in the wake of devastating floods that have affected 21 million people.

It's a scene Jolie said may be hard for some to understand especially because of how far away it is. If people saw the eyes of the children pleading for help, perhaps they'd understand the Pakistanis' will to live, she said.

"If they met all these children [who are] so resilient and are still children and so full of life and love and hope," Jolie said that she thinks people would grasp the situation better.

"I think it is this part of the world, they are resilient people. Think of all that they have been hit with. They continue to move on, to rebuild."

ISLAMABAD Hollywood star Angelina Jolie urged people on Wednesday to put aside corruption fears and donate cash to help Pakistan's 21 million flood victims, as she ended a tour of areas devastated by deluges.

Pakistan's government has been heavily criticised at home and abroad over perceived corruption, which many attribute to the slow pace of donations to the UN's flood appeal, which has raised two thirds of its 460 million dollar goal.

"I don't want some people to use it (corruption) as an excuse not to give assistance," Jolie told reporters at the UN refugee agency's Islamabad office.

"I have seen what they have done in the field. I've physically seen people assisted, so if you are nervous about giving money directly in one way there are other ways to do it," she said.

There have been allegations that aid funds have been mishandled since the start of the floods crisis six weeks ago, and despite massive relief efforts by the UN, United States and other donors, the UN has spoken of Pakistan's "image deficit" affecting donations.

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said its own appeal is only half-funded, and Elisabeth Byrs, spokeswoman at the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said extra monies were "still stagnating".

Jolie, clad in a grey dress and black head scarf, spoke after visiting the militant-hit northwest of the country, home to 1.7 million long-term Afghan refugees who have fled fighting in their neighbouring country.

When asked about the church's plan, Jolie responded, "I have hardly the words that somebody would do that to somebody's religious book."

In a statement on Wednesday, the Vatican said it had heard with great concern of the planned commemoration of the September 11, 2001 hijack attacks, which killed 2,752 people.

"These deplorable acts of violence, in fact, cannot be counteracted by an outrageous and grave gesture against a book considered sacred by a religious community," it said.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour today joined in denunciations of the Florida pastor whos planning a Koran burning and warned that Republicans who seek to stir up anti-Muslim sentiments are distracting the GOP from its core messaging this fall.

I do not think well of the idea of burning anybody's Koran, or Bible, Book of Mormon or anything else. ... I dont think theres any excuse for it, Barbour, R-Miss., the chairman of the Republican Governors Association, told a breakfast gathering of reporters in Washington sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor.

Asked about Republicans who are using issues like the planned mosque and Islamic cultural center in Lower Manhattan to stoke anti-Muslim feelings, Barbour said:

I dont see it, but I will tell you this: Any issue that takes peoples eye off of unemployment, job creation, economic growth, taxes, spending, deficits, debt, is taking your eye off the ball.

Is burning Quran a hate crime or a free speech issue?

Is burning a Bible because you hate Christianity, a hate crime? How about burning a Torah? Is that an anti-Semitic act? And this brings us to the question of burning a Quran....

Is the Dove World Outreach Center's Quran bonfire, planned for the Saturday anniversary of the 9/11 attack, a hate crime or n expression of free speech -- like the deplorable but legal protest act of burning a U.S. flag to object to a government policy? (You can vote at the end of this post.)

I noticed that my colleague Doug Stanglin's On Deadline blog, which is running a constant update on the church's plans, has a quick poll to readers. Of the 4,273 people who voted in the unscientific survey by early this morning, 24% said the church should not cancel its plans.

But there's no way of telling if they say Dove should fly with this because they agree with the pastor's stance that Islam is "of the devil" or because they see it as a free speech issue.

But do the 76% who say Dove should not do this object because they see, like General David Petraeus and the Vatican, a potential flash point for worldwide violent protest, or because they deem it as a hate crime, one intended to generate fear and loathing of Muslims based on their beliefs that these are the words of Allah?

"If the government fails to stop this, this will be the latest manifestation of religious terrorism, and it would ruin America's relations with the Muslim world," said Sheikh Abdel Muti al-Bayyumi, who sits on the Sunni Muslim seat of learning's highest council, the Islamic Research Academy.

"This will give an opportunity to terrorism. Are they trying to fight terrorism or encourage it?" Bayyumi asked.

Church leaders rally, speak out against anti-Muslim rhetoric

Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Church in Gainesville, Florida, has said he will proceed with what he is calling "International Burn a Koran Day" despite warnings from high-ranking church and governmental leaders that his actions could have grave consequences for national security and Christians throughout the world.

On Sept. 7, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs echoed the concern recently expressed by Gen. David Petraeus, NATO's International Security Assistance Force commander in Afghanistan, that the Quran burning could danger U.S. troops and citizens abroad.

A group of U.S. interfaith leaders -- including the Rev. Michael Kinnamon, general secretary of the National Council of Churches, and Episcopal Diocese of New York Bishop Mark Sisk -- held a summit and press conference Sept. 7 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., to condemn Jones' plans and to decry incidents of violence committed against innocent Muslims.

An NCC press release said the leaders acknowledged the "anti-Muslim frenzy" that has existed in the U.S. since plans were announced to build an Islamic community center near Ground Zero -- where the twin towers of the World Trade Center stood before they were attacked and destroyed by Muslim extremists on Sept. 11, 2001. The center, now known as Park 51, has drawn both criticism and support.

"The plan to build this center is, without doubt, an emotionally highly charged issue," Sisk said in an Aug. 24 letter to his diocese. "But as a nation with tolerance and religious freedom at its very foundation, we must not let our emotions lead us into the error of persecuting or condemning an entire religion for the sins of its most misguided adherents."
