After an earthquake it is the government body that is meant to help, but
increasing numbers of Christchurch people are saying the Earthquake
Commission is doing the exact opposite - stopping them from getting on
with their lives.

They say more than six months after the first quake they are still waiting
for the commission to do something to help them.

They say they are tired, confused and frustrated, and many are angry
enough to take legal action against the commission.

Christchurch East MP Lianne Dalziel Relevant offers The Government will
use Christchurch as the scapegoat for getting its way on asset sales and
public spending cuts, Christchurch East MP Lianne Dalziel says.
.
Dalziel made the accusation at a public forum on Canterbury earthquake
issues in Dunedin on Friday night.
.
She detailed her quake experiences and what the Government had done in
setting up authorities to investigate the disaster.
.
Dalziel then outlined what she believed was the Government's plan to carry
out a post-election economic prescription.
.
Next month's zero Budget "won't be anything" in contrast to what the
Government had planned, she said.
.
"That is why I have entitled this address `Shaken Now Stirred'," she said.
.
"I am stirred to speak out about the risk that the Government will use the
cost of repairing the damage to Christchurch as an excuse to implement a
radical programme of asset sales and public-sector spending cuts."
.
Dalziel said she could see Prime Minister John Key and Finance Minister
Bill English talking about the high cost of rebuilding Christchurch, the
unaffordability of continued borrowing, and the need for strong measures
to ensure the rest of the country was not held back.

The latter would be accompanied by a reference to popular projects, she
said.
