These two databases have been created by AARP to facilitate the
international exchange of policy and program-relevant information in
aging. AgeSource Worldwide identifies several hundred information
resources in some 25 countries which are significant either in size or in
their unique coverage of particular aging-related issues. The resources
include, among others, clearinghouses, libraries, databases, training
modules, major reports, and Web metasites.

This Policy Framework is intended to inform discussion and the
formulation of action plans that promote healthy and active ageing. It was
developed by WHO's Ageing and Life Course Programme in 2002.
AgeStats Worldwide
Provides access to comparative statistical data that compare the situation
of older adults across countries or regions around a variety of issues
areas. The most recent data and projections as far ahead as 2060 are
provided where available.
A guide to population information on UN system web sites
Provides links to global and regional statistical data across the UN
family of organizations. Relatively little of this data is age
disaggregated. Published by the UN Population Division.
Guide to the National Implementation of the Madrid International Plan of
Action on Ageing
The Guide is intended for all those involved in policy-making, and
particularly those trying to implement the recommendations of the Madrid
International Plan of Action on Ageing. The Guide offers practical
suggestions for how to move forward in the implementation of the Plan
across a broad spectrum of issues.
Human development report, 2007/2008
The "Human Development Indicators" in the appendix to this report track
progress in human development across a number of social and economic
parameters that have relevance for aging. Among the 2007/2008 indicators
that have some relevance for aging are: Table 1 (p. 245) - ranks countries
and regions by the Human Development Index (HDI) for 2005; Table 4 (p.
256) - covers human and income poverty in OECD countries, Central and
Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States; Table 5 (p.
258) - covers demographic trends; Table 6 (p. 262) - covers commitment to
health: resources, access and services; Table 9 (p. 272) - addresses
leading global health crises and risks, such as HIV prevalence for persons
ages 15-49 and the prevalence of smoking by gender; Table 10 (p. 276) -
includes life expectancy at birth, 1970-1975, and 2000-2005, and the
probability at birth of surviving to age 65; Table 14 (p. 292) - includes
data related to economic performance.
Public Policy and the Challenge of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases
Contains an agenda for action in response to the growing economic, social,
and health problems posed by chronic non-communicable diseases. Published
in 2007.
Research Agenda on Ageing for the 21st Century: 2007 Update
Provides the full text of an international research agenda developed under
the auspices of the International Association of Gerontology and the
United Nations Office on Ageing. It was presented at the Second World
Assembly on Ageing in 2002 and revised in 2007.
WHO core health indicators online database
With this query system, users can construct tables for any combination of
countries, indicators and years for several hundred health indicators. At
this point, very few relate directly to aging, with the exception of life
expectancy and healthy life expectancy, and the probability of dying
between ages 15-60. Much of the data is updated annually.
WHO Mortality Database
These are basic underlying raw data files of deaths registered in national
vital registration systems, with underlying cause of death as coded by the
relevant national authority. The data, together with the necessary
instructions, file structures, code reference tables, etc. can be used by
institutions and organizations which need access at this level of detail
and have available the required information technology (IT) resources to
use this information.
World Bank data by topic
Multiple databases are available for all countries of the world. While the
most of the data is not specific to older persons, it does provide the
context within which population aging is taking place. Much of the data is
available free of charge; however, subscriptions are necessary in some
cases.
World Economic and Social Survey (WESS) 2007: Development in an Ageing
World
The 2007 Survey analyses the implications of population ageing for social
and economic development around the world. Much data is provided in the
form of figures and tables.
World health report 2006--Working together for health
The statistical annexes of WHO's annual health reports provide selected
health-related indicators for most countries of the world. Annex Table 1
includes data for most countries of the world related to dependency
ratios, percentage of population 60+, and life expectancy at birth by sex
for the years 1994 and 2004. Annex Table 2 shows total national health
expenditure by country, as well as total public and private expenditure,
and government expenditure on health as a percentage of total government
expenditure. Annex Table 3 shows measured levels of per capita expenditure
on health for the same period. No statistical annexes have been included
in later World Health Reports.
