In Swift Move, 6 Police Officers Charged in Freddie Gray's Death

The relatives of Freddie Gray got a swift answer to their calls for
justice, as Baltimores chief prosecutor announced Friday that six police
officers will be criminally charged in the death of the 25-year-old.

Marilyn Mosby spoke forcefully at a Friday press conference, saying
officers acted without probable cause when they arrested Gray on April 12,
and then recklessly disregarded his severe injuries suffered during police
custody. Gray died a week later from his injuries.

The manner of death has been ruled a homicide stemming from a fatal neck
injury that occurred while Gray was unrestrained by a seatbelt while in
police custody in the police vehicle transporting him to the station,
Mosby said.

To the people of Baltimore and the demonstrators across America: I heard
your call for No justice, no peace, Mosby said. Your peace is sincerely
needed as I work to deliver justice on behalf of this young man."

News of the charges came as Baltimore remained on edge following the riots
that swept through the city Monday evening. Grays death is the latest in a
series of fatal confrontations between police officers and black men that
has reopened a national debate about police brutality and the need to lift
poor communities.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said Friday afternoon that five
of the officers were in custody and all have been suspended. Later in the
afternoon, all six officers were in custody.

There will be justice for Mr. Gray. There will be justice for his family,
and there will be justice for the people of Baltimore, she said.
