The World Needs to Think Very Carefully
About How to Deal with Kim Jong-Un

Kim Jong-un, the North Korean Dictator, is obviously insane. First he allegedly had his ex-girlfriend executed by machine gun. Now it is being reported that he ordered his uncle to be torn apart by savage dogs.

.

snip

.

This is why I believe that the world should be profoundly concerned by Kim Jong-un's behavior. In his televised New Year address on wednesday, he said: "Should another war break out on this land, it will result in a deadly nuclear catastrophe and the United States can never be safe." This sounds to me very much like the threat of a preemptive nuclear strike.

.

I think we need to take this threat very seriously.

A Dog of a Story: Why Kim Jong Un
Probably Did Not Feed His Uncle to 120 Hounds

A report in a Hong Kong-based newspaper claims Kim Jong Un had his uncle torn to bits by a pack of ravenous dogs

Kim Jong Uns late uncle was worse than a dog, according to the blustery state media account of his purge. But was he killed by a pack of half-starved dogs?

.

Thats the claim of Beijing-linked Hong Kong newspaper, Wen Wei Po, which on Dec. 12 reported that the instead of being executed by a firing squad, as is typical, Jang was stripped naked, thrown in a cage with five of his associates, and devoured by 120 hounds as Kim Jong Un and 300 officials watched. The dogs preyed on the prisoners until they were completely eaten up, according to the Straits Times, a Singaporean newspaper, who picked up the story on Dec. 24.

.

snip

.

First, there is the reporting itself. North Koreas stubborn isolation makes it nearly impossible for reporters to independently verify this type of claim. Very few foreign reporters have access to the country and those who do, like the Associated Press, are kept on a tight leash. It is striking that Wen Wei Po was the only Chinese media outlet with the story. Chinas powers of information control are not perfect, but the arms of its propaganda machine tend to wave in synch.

.

snip

.

The method, in the end, may not matter so much. Nobody would argue in favor of death by dog, death by mortar fire, or, really, any other type of execution under Kim familys grim authoritarian rule. But the focus on palace politics, rumors and intrigue seems to be calling attention away from what we do know is taking place.

.

Just last month, Amnesty International released new satellite images of a notorious North Korean prison camp that shows new housing blocks. A former guard told the agency of ongoing forced labor, the imprisonment of children, and of people being forced to dig their own graves. If you are still hungry for horror, give it a read.

Something Weird Happened in North Korea: Report

.

You can do a lot in journalism with the word report. For instance, see NBCs Kim Jong Uns executed uncle was eaten alive by 120 hungry dogs: report.

.

Did this really happen? We dont know! Experts seem skeptical. It first appeared in English in the Singapore-based Straits Times, which cited a three-week-old story in the pro-Beijing Hong Kong paper Wen Wei Po, which was itself pretty thinly sourced. Perhaps not quite grasping how the viral Internet works, the Straits Times reporter chose to lead with how the execution would adversely affect bilateral relations between North Korea and China rather than the naked man being eaten alive by ravenous dogs.

.

For what it's worth, a New York Times report from last month cited South Korean intelligence officials and news media reported that Jang Song-thaeks aides were executed by anti-aircraft machine gun but that he himself was killed by more traditional means.

.

But we dont know for sure that it didnt happen. There have been other reports of exotic execution methods used against North Korean senior officials. Brutal torture is certainly common in the North Korean penal system.

Did Kim Jong-Un execute his uncle with 'starving dogs'?

AFTER North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un declared his uncle to be "despicable human scum, worse than a dog," a newspaper claims to have details of his horrific execution.

.

Unlike previous executions of political prisoners which were carried out by firing squads with machine guns, the Hong Kong Wen Wei Po reports Jang Song Thaek was stripped naked and thrown into a cage, along with his five closest aides.

.

"Then 120 hounds, starved for three days, were allowed to prey on them until they were completely eaten up. This is called "quan jue", or execution by dogs," the article reads.

.

snip

.

The report claims the entire process lasted for an hour, with Jong-Un watching it along with 300 senior officials.

.

The alleged news of how his uncle was executed comes as South Korea dismissed North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un's conciliatory words in his New Year message as an empty gesture, urging Pyongyang to scrap its nuclear programs to show it is committed to better relations.

.

In his speech yesterday, Kim hailed the execution last month of his once-powerful uncle Jang Song-Thaek and accused the United States and South Korea of manoeuvring for a nuclear war.

.

JUST HOW FAR IS KIM JONG-UN PREPARED TO GO?

.

But he also called for a "favourable climate" to improve relations with the South, saying it was time for the two Koreas to stop doing "anything detrimental to national unity and reconciliation".

.

In its first official response, the South Korean government said it was sceptical about the intentions of Kim, who has ruled the nuclear-armed North since the death of his father, Kim Jong-Il, in December 2011.

Stalin would have slapped the Great Successor heartily on his back for executing his traitor-for-all-the-ages uncle. Well done, young fellow. This young guy, Kim Jong Un, doesnt shirk from killing his own relatives. He reminds me of myself. I did not hesitate to shoot my closest friends and the relatives of my beloved first wife, Katya. Shooting friends and relatives sends a chilling message to all. Well done!

.

This Un guy sure knows how to run a show trial. Uncle Song pled guilty to all charges, even the most outrageous. I had to wait until I was 49, and here he is orchestrating show trials at 30. But credit where credit is due: I pioneered the choreography back in 1936.

.

The apple does not fall far from the tree. Uns grandfather dispatched 12 of his most senior officials back in 1953, my last year on earth. Un promised Uncle Song he could live if he confessed and that his wife and children would be safe. I used that trick hundreds of times, and they all fell for it, but what could I do when the courts sentenced them to death? As I used to say: Friendship is friendship but business is business.

.

Well, lets now see how good Un is at leadership purges. After all, Uncle Song confessed to plotting with military and foreign powers to overthrow the government. Uncle Song must have recruited hundreds of despicable scum coup plotters to his side. Un will execute them in due course, even those that did nothing.

No, Kim Jong Un probably didnt feed his uncle to 120 hungry dogs

If you've been on the Internet at all today, you've almost certainly seen the story claiming that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had his uncle executed last month by stripping him naked and feeding him to 120 hungry dogs. The story was first reported by a minor Hong Kong outlet on Dec. 12, was picked up by a Singaporean newspaper on Dec. 24 and since late Thursday has been sweeping through nearly every corner of the U.S. media. The only problem is that it's probably probably not true.

.

It was indeed a big surprise last month when South Korean intelligence revealed that Kim had purged his own uncle, Jang Song Thaek, which North Korea confirmed a couple of days later with a long screed in its state media. The highly public nature of the purge, which ended with Pyongyang announcing Jang's execution, was totally unprecedented and legitimately shocking, which is a high bar for North Korea news.

.

Crazy-sounding stories happen with some frequency in North Korea, where the government has a well-earned reputation for taking political punishments to medieval extremes. But there are five big reasons that this story just does not seem particularly plausible. The fact that the Western media have so widely accepted a story they would reject if it came out of any other country tells us a lot about how North Korea is covered -- and how it's misunderstood.

.

First and foremost, let's consider the source. The story originated in a Hong Kong newspaper called Wen Wei Po, which oddly makes the claim without citing a source. With a couple of high-quality exceptions, Hong Kong media have a reputation for sensationalist and tabloidy stories that do not always turn out to be true. But, even by Hong Kong standards, Wen Wei Po is considered an unusually unreliable outlet. A recent study found that, out of Hong Kong's 21 newspapers, Wen Wei Po ranks 19th for credibility. (Thanks to Asia-watcher Taylor Washburn for flagging this.)

.

snip

.

Other Points Covered in This Article:

.

Second, consider the fact that the rest of the Chinese media have not touched this story in the almost-month since it came out.

Third, South Korea's media have also not touched the story.

Fourth, the time lapse: this story has been around for almost a month, and it's not been anywhere near confirmed.

Fifth, the predominant story of what happened is much more plausible.

Sixth, as the satirist Karl Sharro put it, "The clue about the story of Kim Jong Un's uncle being fed to 120 hundred dogs being false is who has time to count dogs at a time like that."

.

But all of this raises the question: why are so many people and so many major U.S. media outlets still willing to treat this implausible story as plausible? This seems to be a problem particular to stories out of North Korea, about which almost any story is treated as broadly credible, no matter how outlandish or thinly sourced. There's no other country to which we bring such a high degree of gullibility.

Is It Remotely Plausible That Kim Jong-un Had His Uncle Eaten By 120 Dogs?

To start with, there are many strange aspects to the report. For example, while the Strait Times article has made headlines over the world today, it was actually first published on December 24. Then, while the Singaporean newspaper is a fairly well-respected newspaper in itself, the actual reporting for this story it cites a December 12 article in Wen Wei Po, a Hong Kong-based newspaper supportive of the Chinese government. In studies of the different credibility ratings of Hong Kong newspapers, Wen Wei Po consistently ranks near the bottom of the tables.

.

Over at NK News, Chad O'Carroll has spoken to a number of North Korea experts about the report and its trustworthiness. The results are decidedly mixed, though one expert, Honorary Senior Research Fellow in Sociology and Modern Korea at the University of Leeds Aidan Foster-Carter, points out that North Korea has released a number of videos of effigies of South Korean officials being ravaged by dogs so, there may be a kernel of truth to the method at least, though you have to wonder how practical execution of a live human by dog really is.

.

The sad reality is that this rumor, like many that come out of North Korea, is almost completely unverifiable. Few foreign journalists work inside North Korea. The Associated Press is the only Western news organizations with a bureau there, and Chinese and Russian news agencies are constrained by their own government's policies censorship. North Korea's own reporting is incomplete and suspect.

.

Thus, many experts view the more absurd stories that come out of North Korea with trepidation. Last year, when there were rumors that Kim may have had his ex-girlfriend (or rather, rumored ex-girlfriend) executed, many North Korea watchers expressed disbelief. "I don't trust these sources," says Steven Herman, formerly Voice of America's Korea correspondent, told Business Insider at the time. "Even mainstream media in South Korea has repeatedly been wrong on these sensationalistic stories originating from the North."

Did Kim Jong Un Feed His Uncle To 120 Dogs? Be Skeptical

On Dec. 12, that Jang had just been tried and executed for alleged crimes against the state, the relatively small Hong Kong newspaper claimed Jang had been "stripped naked and thrown into a cage" to be killed and eaten by 120 dogs.

.

Twelve days later, , adding that Wen Wei Po also claimed the execution by dogs had been supervised by Kim himself and witnessed by 300 senior North Korean officials.

.

Then this week, the "month-long rumors ... inexplicably re-emerged," . Why now? It adds that "Christopher Green, international editor at The Daily NK warned that mainstream media organizations had a tendency to reprint sensationalist stories on North Korea with little regard for truth."

.

Ah, the truth. That brings us to the debunking.
