PITTSBURGH, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- A Pennsylvania university said it is
developing software translating Creole into other languages in an attempt
to help Haitian earthquake relief efforts.
Carnegie Mellon University's database has been used in the last week by
Washington-based Microsoft Research to create an experimental system that
includes written and spoken Haitian words and their English translations,
the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Thursday.
"We've taken a couple of years worth of work on a text and spoken-word
database and made it available to developers," CMU spokesman Byron Spice
said.
French is Haiti's official language, but is spoken by "elite members of
society," while Creole is based on French and developed over the 200 years
since Haitians overthrew French colonialists, said Robert Frederking,
senior systems scientist at CMU's Language Technologies Institute.

In response to the humanitarian crisis in Haiti, scientists at Carnegie
Mellon University's Language Technologies Institute (LTI) have publicly
released spoken and textual data they've compiled on Haitian Creole so
that translation tools desperately needed by doctors, nurses and other
relief workers on the earthquake-ravaged island can be rapidly developed.
Since Carnegie Mellon began to make the data publicly available last week,
a team at Microsoft Research has used it to help develop an experimental,
web-based system for translating between English and Haitian Creole

a not-for-profit association based in Paris, plans to distribute a medical
triage dictionary to doctors in Haiti once that data has been converted
into a readable format. LTI researchers, likewise, have begun working on
their own translation system for Haitian Creole. Although French is the
official language of Haiti and is spoken by elites, Haitian Creole is the
most widely spoken language in Haiti, said Robert Frederking, LTI senior
systems scientist. Haitian Creole is based on French, but has evolved
substantially since Haitians overthrew the French colonists more than 200
years ago. Word meanings have drifted and the language incorporates some
African syntax.

The nonprofit group Translators Without Borders based in Paris plans to
distribute a medical triage dictionary for doctors in Haiti once the
Creole language data from CMU is converted into a readable format.
"This should be a big help, because if you cannot communicate, it is going
to be difficult to get around and assist others," said Leon Pampile of
Stanton Heights, a native of Haiti and member of the nonprofit Functional
Literacy Ministry of Haiti.
Liam Carstens, medical coordinator for Brother's Brother Foundation relief
agency in the North Side, said such organizations have not had problems
communicating because they had a well-established network in Haiti before
the quake.
"We delivered 50 shipments there in 2009," Carstens said. "But I imagine
any group putting aid workers on the ground there for the first time would
encounter some difficulties."
CMU created its database for Haitian Creole in the late 1990s for a
Haitian Creole speech-to-speech translation device for the Department of
Defense.
A prototype Haitian Creole translation system was delivered to the Army,
but "as far as we know, nobody ever field-tested it," Frederking said.
