. COUNTRIES: HAITI : DISASTERS: EARTHQUAKES: Haiti Aid Meeting Next Week Crucial to Recovery, Minister Says Haiti Aid Meeting Next Week Crucial to Recovery, Minister Says By Helen Murphy and Alexander Cuadros Bloomberg <http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601086&sid=aUT9x3x7VRcQ>Jan. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Haitis international donors must look beyond immediate relief efforts when they meet in Montreal next week and consider how to rebuild the devastated Caribbean nation, Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon said.
More than $1.2 billion in aid has been pledged so far to help Haitis reconstruction in the wake of a magnitude 7.0 earthquake on Jan. 12 that may have left more than 100,000 people dead, according to United Nationsdata. Cannon called the Jan. 25 meeting, a session to prepare a donors conference, crucial to coordinate long-term recovery efforts.
Immediate needs are being addressed such as food, water, shelter, Cannon told reporters in Ottawa today. This meeting will serve to establish a clear and common vision among the key partners involved in relief efforts in Haiti.
Leaders of non-governmental organizations and neighboring states have already begun raising questions about how the Western Hemispheres poorest county can be rehabilitated after a quake the UN estimates left 250,000 people injured and a third of the buildings in the capital, Port-au-Prince, damaged.
<snip>The president of the Inter-American Development Bank, Luis Alberto Moreno, yesterday asked the lenders board to consider forgiving some of Haitis $447 million in debt. Moreno also called on the board to increase grants for reconstruction, according to a statement on the banks Web site.
The World Bank, which has provided $308 million in grants and interest-free loans to the country since 2005, said Jan. 13 it will send Haiti an additional $100 million to help with reconstruction efforts.
Fernandez proposed that a fund-raising committee lead the effort and devise a strategy to wean Haiti off food imports, boost agricultural production and increase investment in infrastructure, health and education.
