10 Best New Features of Windows Server 8

With Windows Server 8, Microsoft has outdone itself, from a revamped UI to hundreds of new features, including vastly improved virtualization management

Microsoft claims 300 new and improved features in Windows Server 8, but after a few days in Redmond watching demos and stepping through lab sessions, we wonder whether the marketing guys accidentally left off a zero. It's hard to name a Windows Server feature that hasn't been tweaked, streamlined, wizardized, or completely revamped. Whatever grudge you may hold against Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 8 will almost certainly make amends.

.

If you're a large shop struggling to manage hundreds of Windows servers, Windows Server 8 should ease the job. If you're a small shop trying to squeeze high-end capability from a low-end budget, Windows Server 8 has plenty for you, too. With Windows Server 8, everything from server deployment to high availability becomes smoother and more automated.

.

In fact, there's so much of note in the new OS, it's almost a crime to stop at the top 10, listed below in no particular order. Believe it or not, data deduplication for production file servers, native PowerShell support in Hyper-V, and virtual Active Directory didn't even make the list. Look at it this way: There will be even more surprises in store when you finally get your hands on a Windows Server 8 beta.

Windows 8: What it's really all about

After months of buildup, Microsoft unveils the next generation of Windows for PCs and tablets

Now we know. Microsoft's president for Windows, Steven Sinofsky, today revealed a "reimagined" Windows, which boasts a very different, tile-based user interface called Metro based on Windows Phone that is touch-savvy, runs on ARM processors as well as Intel x86 chips, and will also work on traditional keyboard-and-mouse PCs and run anything that runs on Windows 7. The ability to run legacy Windows apps on ARM processors was not expected by pundits' predictions. The new version, code-named Windows 8, is now in developer preview and will be available for download later today from dev.windows.com, with no release date yet set.

.

Sinofsky said Microsoft redesigned Windows because "things are a whole lot different now than three years ago.... Touch is a whole new dimension. Mobility is a whole new dimension.... We want Windows to respond to that." He also said Windows 8 uses just 281MB of RAM, down from 404MB in Windows 7, and that all the new capabilities are native to the core OS, not layered on top of it. That should ease development and aid performance, he said. Microsoft has said Windows 8 will not run on smartphones, which will use Windows Phone 7 instead.

Watch out, Apple: Windows 8 could trump the iPad

Microsoft has adopted Apple's usability religion with great fervor, and it looks poised to deliver an impressive result

Earlier this week, I outlined Microsoft's apparent tablet strategy and the issues that could help it succeed or fail. Now that Microsoft has revealed its plans, I can better gauge its chances. My conclusion: Microsoft may win after all. The folks at Redmond seem to have bought the design philosophy on which Steve Jobs, Jonathan Ive, and the rest of the Apple team have based their remarkable iPad, iPhone, and Mac OS X resurrection: simplicity, intentionality, delight, and clarity of purpose. And they've taken it to heart in Windows 8 and its "touch first" approach to computing across PCs and tablets.

.

Demos of course are almost never as good as reality, but even with that in mind, I was blown away by what Microsoft has shown this week at its Build conference. And I have one serious caveat: Although Microsoft is giving developers touch-enabled Samsung Windows 8 tablets for testing, it is not letting the press borrow or use them, except (according to one PR staffer) for a few favored writers -- that's often what a tech company does when it has something to hide. So my enthusiasm may be misplaced. (We'll know only when Windows 8 ships, likely in mid to late 2012.)

.

But if Windows 8 is nearly as good as the demos look, Microsoft could very well win the mobile wars, despite years of failures in Windows tablets and mediocre smartphone efforts. If Hewlett-Packard CEO L Apotheker had seen a preview of Windows 8 tablets, that would explain why he suddenly killed the WebOS-based TouchPad tablet last month. Windows 8 is very likely to squeeze Google Android out of second place in the tablet market -- after all, Android is largely an iOS imitation, and I don't see how Google will stand out if Microsoft joins Apple in offering compelling, differentiated innovation.

O'Donnell predicted that in 2015, Microsoft will still be a small player with tablets, behind Android and iOS. He said it is somewhat ironic that the Samsung Series 7 Slate that was given to 5,000 developers at Microsoft's Build conference this week is almost always depicted with an attachable keyboard in Samsung photographs.

.

Noting that the version being used by developers has an Intel i5 chip, O'Donnell also questioned how easily Microsoft will adapt coming tablets to ARM-based chips as it indicated it will at the conference.

Windows Server 8: built for the cloud, built for virtualization

Where Windows 8 is an operating system built for the tablet, Windows Server 8 is an operating system built for the cloud. Not the Windows Azure public cloud; rather, it's built for "private clouds": on-premises, virtualized deployments with tens or hundreds of virtual machines.

.

This kind of large scale administration requires a new approach to system management. That approach centers around PowerShell and Server Manager, the new Metro-style management console. Server Manager provides a convenient GUI, but behind the scenes, PowerShell commands are constructed and executed. The commands can also be copied, edited, and executed directly in PowerShell. This should sound familiar to many Windows administrators, as Exchange already uses this style of management, with the GUI being a mere layer over PowerShell.

.

The same mechanism is used to administer multiple machines simultaneously; it makes remote PowerShell calls to multiple machines, allowing actions to be performed on them in parallel. To enable this, PowerShell has been expanded with more than 2,000 new commands.

.

snip

.

Windows Server 8 will have three modes. Microsoft has added to the two existing modesthe traditional GUI mode, with the full GUI stack and shell, and Server Core, that offers only a command-linea third that's somewhere in the middle. It doesn't include the full shell, so there's no Explorer or Internet Explorer, but it does include Server Manager and MMC. Moreover, the graphical shell will be an installable component that can be added or removed at any time.

.

The idea of all this is not that GUIs shouldn't be used for administrationthis isn't a regression to a UNIX-style command-line er alles approachbut that the administration should be remote. Servers themselves should have the barest minimum software installed in order to reduce their attack surface area.

Windows 8 Running on ARM: 10 Reasons This Partnership Matters

The New Relationship Suggests Microsoft Is Open to Change

.

With the BUILD Conference in full swing, much of the talk surrounding the tech industry right now has to do with Microsoft. And as of late, quite a bit of the attention has surrounded Microsofts partnership with ARM. Under the terms of the deal, Windows 8 will work with ARM processors, paving the way for mobile-device makers to use Windows in a new way.

.

Ever since Microsoft announced its partnership with ARM in January at the Consumer Electronics Show, there has been some debate over the viability of such a deal. Some detractors have said its bad for companies and, especially, consumers. Supporters, on the other hand, said that the deal could very well be the best move Microsoft has made in years. In the end, theres no telling which side will be right until ARM-based devices running Windows finally hit store shelves. (Microsoft is expected to release Windows 8 in the second half of 2012.)

.

Until then, its important for everyonesupporters and detractors, aliketo understand that the partnership between the companies on Windows 8 matters in a big way. And the deal can affect the industry far more than some people think.

.

Heres a look at why the partnership between Microsoft and ARM matters:
