San Francisco When Hewlett-Packard CEO Mark Hurd recently stepped down in disgrace, it capped a tumultuous decade for the iconic Silicon Valley business that saw HP morph into a powerful global behemoth, but one that seems to get caught in one embarrassing scandal after another, leaving its corporate culture in tatters.

Five years ago, a smiling Hurd posed for a picture in front of the tiny garage in Palo Alto, Calif., where HP was born. The new CEO was there to rededicate the fabled spot, now designated as the birthplace of Silicon Valley where William Hewlett and David Packard started the technology company that became famous for its superior products and its singular corporate culture.

Hurds predecessor, Carly Fiorina now the Republican candidate for senator in California also had posed for a photo in front of the garage, and in 2005 she was fired after the board lost faith in her leadership. A year later, HP Chairwoman Patricia Dunn stepped down and even faced felony charges during the companys boardroom-espionage fiasco of 2006.

Along with waves of layoffs in recent years, these leadership crises underscored the uncomfortable transformation of a business that, until the late 1990s, was known for nurturing a sincere and collegial culture, referred to simply as the HP way.

Hurds sudden resignation came after the company said the veteran CEO, once widely acclaimed for his business prowess, had submitted false expense claims and demonstrated a profound lack of judgment about his relationship with a female marketing contractor.

The companys aggressive management style including the mass layoffs, reduced pay and benefits, and a performance review process that some employees view as demeaning has emotionally alienated some.

At a time when rank-and-file employees were asked to make sacrifices, top executives were being paid big salaries and huge bonuses. You see the money people are making, and its staggering. To me, its appalling, said a former executive who left HP just before Hurd arrived and did not want to be identified because he still has friends working at the company.
