Hi Folks some revision notes for tomorrow nights exam especially for anyone 
who's memory sticks  have failed and lost notes.

Have a quick read in the morning if you can. And would be good idea to look 
over  the notes from last week and week before  I sent out through e mail about 
finding files . 

 

How to find out the operating system you are using?

First locate my computer by pressing Windows+e and arrow to my computer Then go 
to properties by pressing Alt +enter,  or alt+F and up arrow to properties and 
enter. Then you will hear the type of operating system you are using. For 
example Microsoft xp home edition 2003 service pack 2  



How to extract a file

First locate the file on your candidate disk which you would like to extract. 
Then press alt+F and and arrow to extract and press enter. Then follow the 
wizard and tab to next button and finally tab to ok and files are extracted to 
current folder. 

 

Changing the attributes of a file to read only 

 

Locate the file you want to change. 

Pres alt and F for the file menu. 

Up arrow to properties, and press enter. The first option is a check box, which 
says, read only, if not checked, check it by pressing spacebar, tab to ok, and 
press enter, the file is now change to read only. 

How to create shortcut from ECDL folder

First select folder then press applications key and press enterand shortcut is 
created in your candidate drive.  

 

 

How to sort files in descending order 

 

First ensure that you are in the list of files. Then, go to the view menu, by 
pressing alt and v. down arrow to arrange icons by, and arrow right into the 
submenu. Down arrow till you hear size, and press enter. 

 

 

 

 

Rename a file or folder.
  1.. Within any drive on your computer, locate the listing of the desired file 
or ffolder. The item will be highlighted. 
  2.. Either press F2, or choose Rename from the item's applications menu. 
  3.. Type the new name, and press ENTER. 
Creating a new folder
When you create a new folder, it is created as a child of the currently open 
folder. In other words, it becomes a sub-folder of the parent. 
To create a new folder:

  1.. Open the File menu, by pressing Alt F. 
  2.. Move either up or down to the menu item titled "new". 
  3.. Within this menu, move to the "new folder" option, and press Enter. 
  4.. By deefault, Windows will have created a folder name for you, something 
like "New Folder". Type a more meaningful name for the folder, and press ENTER. 
 

File types 

The different file types which are commonly used are: 

 

.doc, word processing 

 

.xls, spread sheets 

 

.mdb, data bases 

 

.gif, graphic 

.MP3 Music or sound file

.JPG picture

 

Renaming a file 

 

Locate the folder or file you wish to rename, then, press alt and f for the 
file menu. Then, arrow upto rename, and press enter. Then, type in the new name 
for your file or folder, and press enter. 

 

Deleting a file 

 

Locate the file you wish to delete, and press the delete key, you will then be 
asked for confirmation, say yes. The file is then deleted, and moved to the 
recycle bin.
