Effective treatment for
Hepatitis C in Cuba
HAVANA, March 13.- Using Cuban technology, the Genetic Engineering and
Biotechnology Center (CIGB) in this capital has obtained a treatment to combat
the Hepatitis C virus and to cure over time lesions to the liver.
The product is composed of two medicines: Alfa-2B Interferon and Rivavirina,
both likewise manufactured on the island.
According to Dr. Hugo Nodarse, MSc. in Pharmaceutical Science at the CIGB,
Cuban patients now have an alternative treatment to increase the possibility of
controlling their hepatic disorders.
The combination of those two formulae will elevate the therapeutic response in
persons suffering from chronic hepatitis, the scientist said.
Although the object of the therapy is to eliminate the circulation of the virus
from the blood, a complete cure is subsequently anticipated based on the
elimination of lesions to the liver and the normalization of the hepatic
enzymes, Nodarse noted.
The National Gastroenterology Institute was in charge of the clinical trials of
this effective product. (AIN)
