ha, ha, if y'all could you'd probably throw stuff at me...i think I
answered my own question...euphemistically known as a V-8 moment.
my field was named DATE. when I changed the field name in Excel to WHEN,
then did the Word merge, wonderful things happened but it's still not
right.
my mergefield looks like this now: {MERGEFIELD "when" \@ "mm/dd/yyyy"
the value in Excel colum when is this: 08/20/2004 09:32
my result after merge is incorrect: 32/20/2004

Hi folks. I asked the wrong question. I MEANT to ask about formatting
date/time. My field looks like this: 08/20/2004 09:32 my desired
result is 08/20/2004. When I use the @ formatting thusly {MERGEFIELD
"date" \@ "mm-dd-yyyy"}, I still get this: 08/20/2004 09:32.
sorry for the confusion...no power for more than a week so far...w/heat
indexes in the 100s, not getting enough oxygen to the brain...or hot
coffee.

Right now, you have a mergefield that looks like this:
{MERGEFIELD Amount }
If you can't see the field codes, hit ALT+F9.
Type inside the brackets so the full field now looks like this:
{MERGEFIELD Amount \# "$#,###.00"}
Remember to hightlight the field and hit F9 before hiding the fields
with ALT+F9.

field appears to be just a number.
Example

Result in Word Merge: 2400.21
How can I get Word to format the value properly?
