Now we're in a market where there are essentially only two prevalent video chipset providers left; Nvidia and ATI. They both claim to create drivers within a unified driver model but the quality has not improved. Microsoft says that the Online Crash Assistance site indicates that over 80% of the crashes submitted are due to video drivers. This is a big reason that VISTA is aimed throwing away DirectX (which was a big push to create a common library for driver-OS interaction) in favor of an even more abstracted interface set.
