Gil, I am a technology coordinator for Adult Basic Education Support programs in Massachusetts. I do not presently teach students directly; rather I work with the teachers on integrating tech into the classrooms. I have previously taught at various levels and have my Master's Degree. I have used Shelly-Cashman series and like them myself and have many, but some of them get to be rather advanced for some students. Also, it seemed Michael was looking for something for himself, and not as a teaching book and I feel that those books are great for a classroom environment, but if someone if just looking for information on a certain aspect of Excel, such as graphs, then they are overkill, which is also why I recommended just utilizing the Internet. The important issue is Michael's abilities, his needs, and why he hasn't liked what he has already found. Many of the books I recommended are too easy for me also, but I am not the end user Patty ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gil" <gil@xxxxxxxxxxxx> To: mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Cc: gil@xxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Thursday, May 13, 2010 10:29:45 AM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: [mso] Re: Standard Dates in Excel Patty, I know you addressed this to Michael, but I'll "chime in" with my comments: For me, the Shelly-Cashman books are on Amazon and that's where I get mine. Great books to follow along with. I just counted up my books from this publisher and I have eight - Access (2), Excel (3), Powerpoint (1) and Dreamweaver CS3 (2): (okay - I'm outdated on the last one). I agree with you on the online material versus books; however, there are some things I prefer to have a book in front of me - like what we're discussing. As to the Dummies series - they are just too simple for my needs. That is not a knock against them because they offer great things for the appropriate people. I do like their online tips though. I've already discussed the poor quality of the New Perspectives series. You say you're an educator. At what level and what do you teach? I'd love to be a college instructor in Microsoft Office, but in my state - one is required to have 4,000 hours of practical experience. I'm assuming that's in teaching and not sure how to get that - unless it's at the K-12 level. I also like Shelly-Cashman series. I'm assuming that they are available on sites such as Amazon. As an educator, I've always received them directly from the publishers. I actually like the Dummy series. I'd be curious though before recommending anything as to what you didn't like about what you've already found. Were they too simple, too hard, too much, not enough info, too much text, not enough pictures, not relevant? It's hard to recommend something without knowing what your needs are. I have found the Internet to actually be a better source of information than books lately, because it tends to be more up to date information. Text outdates itself pretty fast in technology. Microsoft itself has great tutorials, including videos and there are many other excellent sites. I can recommend more if you'd like.
