Same here for the most part.

Yes, I can see Vic's point. If you have a test system, you will do that a
lot just for practical testing purposes. But I know I hear folks say they do
it like they're authoritative and I hate to see newbies get the wrong idea.

And yes, I've only had to replace my Normal a couple time, but then I write
a lot of code and pile up tons of modules in my Normal (which I always have
several backup of!<g>) So I occasionally have to pull a backup to get back
to a version before I trashed it. But as with Vic and his HD...my normal.dot
lives under excess stress! ;-)

And true...I have NEVER reinstalled Office to fix a problem. First...cos' it
rarely ever works and I'd prefer to find a real solution to the problem. But
all too many people tell users "delete normal" "reinstall Office" "reformat
your HD" as a fix.

In fact, just the other day I was talking to a user who was having a
graphics problem and Gateway told her to delete normal AND reinstall
office!<lol>

One of these days I'm going to nail Gateway for all the BLATANT/BAD info
they pass to their users! From tales I've heard...they are really poorly
trained in solutions and are so lazy that they just toss out drastic
attempts to fix stuff...versus providing any real support.

Granted, I'm sure they're inundated with support called from PC newbies who
don't know what they're doing...having bothered to read any of the
manuals...did something wrong and just call Gateway to say the PC is
screwed...so they provide quick (drastic) fix attempts cos' the user won't
know any better.

But if they don't want to deal with application issues, the LEAST they could
do is point users to better support groups like the MS newsgroups or others
like this one to get REAL support versus the garbage Gateway passes
out!<sigh> (I'm sure other places are just as bad...but I hear folks quoting
Gateway the most!)

Thanks a bunch for reporting our needs to Microsoft, Dian....we are glad we
have YOU on our side :-)

And P.S. ... As to the off-topic discussion about formatting a hard drive
for a clean start...I've never had to do this either (Vic does it all the
time, but I think he actually LIKES doing it LOL....plus he does a lot of
testing of programs where he wants to be sure stuff works on default OS
installs with no other software entries in the registry, so I guess this is
the easiest way to do this)...another thing I've never had to do is
rename/delete normal.dot cuz it was corrupt (and how many times do we hear
THAT one?)....and how about reinstalling Office? I never do that either LOL

My feeling is this is becuz I'm fanatical about backing stuff up in case I
ever DO have to do any of the above....I'm sure, the one time I get lazy
about backing up, is when I WILL have to do this...but, at this time, I have
a gazillion CD coasters of old backups I've never had to use.

KNOCKING ON WOOD LIKE A MANIAC HERE lol
