The gutter is used when you are producing a book and want more space beside
the margins where the book is bound (left side of right page and right side
of left page)

To better understand it, go to File > Page Setup and in the area that says
"Multiple Pages" use the dropdown to select "Mirror Margins" ... then go up
to the Gutter settings and increase the size of the gutter and you'll see,
in the Preview, what I mean.

Subject: [mso] MS Word Question Please

Good morning everyone,
A friend asked me last night about what is a "Gutter" (as it relates to
Headres and Footers) in MS Word?
She uses Office 2000 and I used to know what this is but do not remember
anymore.

Any explanation would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Abed
