My earlier reply hasn't shown up here yet. Based on Linda's advice, I tried

  =COUNTIF(H:H,AND(">12/31/2005","<01/01/2007"))

but it didn't work...not sure why. Until we can figure that out, here is an
improved version of the SUMPRODUCT formula I sent before, now using a dynamic
range:

  =SUMPRODUCT(--(YEAR(H1:OFFSET(H$1,0,0,COUNTA(H:H),1))=2006))

  Regards,

  Hutch

If you want everything in 2006, don't use the asterisk ... Use >12/31/05
with <01/01/07 ... Excel will understand that. You can nest them with the
AND function so Excel reads it as greater than Dec. 31, 2005 AND less than
Jan 1, 2007

Subject: [mso] Help with countif using wildcards in Excel

All,

I am trying to use countif in a spreadsheet to tell me how many items were
purchased in 2006. I have a column (H) which has all the dates of
purchases from this year and in the past. The dates are displayed in the
form mm/dd/yy, nut when you edit it it shows the 4-digit year. I come up
with COUNTIF(H:H,"*06*") but that returns 0. Can some one tell me what I am
doing wrong?

Thanks,

Mike Rubinfeld
