I have had that happen occasionally as well.  The = is in the beginning
and they do work in some cells but when copy/paste into a cell sometimes
it is the actual formula.  I did the same - clear all - to get the
formula to then work.

Perhaps the formulas in those cells were not properly entered and are
being interpreted as text? Do they show the "=" before the formulas? Are
those formulas working?
