Christine,

The formula you need is:

        =SUM(IF($D$2:$D$1000=DATEVALUE("08/07/2004"),$E$2:$E$1000,0))

Remember when you enter it to mark it as an array formula, by using
CTRL+ENTER.

The formula assumes you have data in 1000 rows. Note that you could
change the references to look at the whole of columns D and E, but Array
formulae are a real drag on the system and recalculation would take an
age. On the other hand, you don't want to be worrying about data
expanding beyond the formula's reach. I'd therefore suggest you apply
dnamic range naming. For a guide on how to combine this with array
formulae, have a look at my article here:

Subject: [mso] Array Formula

I have a spreadsheet that has a date in column D and the number of hours
in column E. I need to make a formula that looks at the date in column
D and if the date equals 8-7-04, then it should add the number in column
E. I'm pretty sure I need an array formula, but I can't figure out how
to write it. The date is custom Excel date format. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
