We could easily visit OT land with this one but, here's my Office specific
advice:

1. The OS can't live on a dynamic no matter the ver of Windows you have
2. Applications and the OS should be in the same drive. This is because a
huge amount
Of your Office install will actually be blowing into system directories as
"shared" applications. You have no control over this. Setup is the last
authority on these files.
3. Load order is dependent on which versions of those shared apps you must
dev solutions for. If your target audience is Word 2000, that's the last
version you can safely install and install it after you install XP,
provided 2000 will let you run the install after XP.
4. Not using the Net Admin Office install means you're on your own and
very busy. Essentially, all Office patching is now your responsibility.
The kids in IT can't help you remotely anymore. You must always keep a
copy of themedia available so that the proper MSI file is available during
patch installs. This will remain true until the Office Dev team gets a
clue that their wishes play second fiddle to the wishes of the responsible
customers who want to disable Microsoft's Virus Delivery 200X issues.

Formatting whichever drives becomes number 2 as dynamic means you can grow
the volume without a new drive letter if you later add a third hard disk
to the system. I see no performance improvement from this since it is
software based volume management instead of controller hardware based but
it is an extremely stable (since Veritas is buildign the tools for the
job) and convenient solution. Finally, Microsoft recommends that you keep
a swap file on each volume if max performance is your beef. My own opinion
is that there has been absolutely no need for you to manage this function
yourself since the day Windows 3.1 was retired. I've followed the advice
and tested all those settings people recommend and I learned this single
thing: None of those people actually making the recommendation have ever
measured the performance change with anything more complicated than their
own eyes. I have and can tell you that the system does a very good job
when untouched by human imagination.

Drive format, for security and stability, forget about FAT. Go NTFS and
learn good practices for NTFS volumes. It's MUCH more stable than FAT and
data loss is much rarer. Fragmentation can be an issue but it was with
FAT, too.

Okay, can't answer any more specifically than that on the list so I'll be
happy to take it offline if you wish.
