candidate for President of the United

Gen. Clark finished first in his class at West Point, was selected as a Rh=
odes Scholar,
earned a degree from Oxford in
Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and was awarded the Silver Star, Bronz=
e Star, and the
Purple Heart in Viet Nam. He
served as Commander-in-Chief, Southern Command and in the dual role of Com=
mander-in-
Chief, European Command and Supreme
Allied Commander, NATO. He has received honorary knighthoods from the Bri=
tish and
Dutch governments and was made a
commander of the French Legion of Honor. After Gen. Clark retired, Presid=
ent Clinton
awarded him the nation=92s highest
civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He became a Presidenti=
al candidate on
September 17, 2003, and became
an instant top contender for the Democratic nomination.
