After this Yellowhammer had put in several days tirelessly working on a new
nesting cavity, a marauding band of starlings successfully harassed him until
he abandoned his efforts.  They now have taken up residence in the cavity. Is
this an example of "survival of the fittest" or just a cruel joke on a
"woodpecker"?  House sparrows and starlings I have no use for.  Maybe you guys
can explain their positive worth in Nature's grand scheme.
