Analyze this ! I always see Spotted Sandpipers at Capp WMA in late July thru
about the middle of Sept., but always in singles. I spent about three hours
this morning watching Least Sandpipers, Stilts -- all the shorebirds and
waders usually at Capps in the late summer. I had seen both these birds
earlier in the morning making their usual rounds along the mud bar where the
mud and vegetation meet -- always individually -- never together. As I was
about to pack up and leave around 9 am, both birds flew in and settled directly
in front of the blind -- almost fell off my stool. The behavior in this pic
is what ensued for about two minutes or so, but who was timing it ? I think
the spotted bird is a summer adult and the other a juvenile but their behavior
was bizarre -- at least something I had not witnessed previously. What do
you think ?
