Hello Birders,
We will continue our monthly birdwalk schedule at the Noxubee NWR beginning
at 8 a.m. at the Visitor's center this Saturday, August 6. We will visit
Morgan Hill Prairie, Lake Loakfoma, Goose Overlook and the Bluff Lake
Boardwalk. We will finish up at noon.
Please prepare for the heat and bring water or other beverages to stay
hydrated, sun screen and insect repellent. The birds are singing less and
getting quieter, but there are still birds to see. I recently saw some
Wood Storks, and we should be able to find them. Migrant Yellow Warblers
could show themselves too.
For those hardy folks, I plan to visit Oktibbeha County Lake to look for
shorebirds, waders and gulls and terns after a brief lunch. This trip is
not formally part of the birdwalk, but everyone is welcomed to join me.
The lake is being drained, and it has offered some unusual species for this
area over the last few weeks. These include Roseate Spoonbill, Willet,
American Avocet, Laughing Gull, Piping Plover and several other more common
shorebirds. There are no guarantees of special birds, but it is always fun
to try for the unusual. The views are very distant, so bring a spotting
scope to share with those that don't have one.
