At the Aug. chapter mtg, Dave King will teach us about Shorebird ID and get
folks ready for the always fabulous trip to St. Catherine NWR near Natchez
where you will see lots and lots of Wood Storks and Roseate Spoonbills plus
hopefully many shorebirds.
JAS will host nationally known hummingbird bander, Fred Bassett at our Oct
25th chapter mtg. see details below. Fred is a fabulous speaker who bands
several species of hummers in many parts of the U.S.

JAS St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge, south of Natchez.
It’s Shorebird Migration! Each year, millions of shorebirds migrate in
waves through Mississippi from their breeding grounds in Alaska and
northern Canada to their wintering grounds farther south—some traveling
thousands of miles every year. Because these birds travel in large
concentrated groups and since they need specific stop-over habitat where
they can stop to rest and feed they can create quite a spectacle at these
pit-stops. St. Catherine Creek NWR has great stop-over habitat for
migrating shorebirds that follow the Mississippi River. There will also be
lots of Wood Storks, several kinds of ibis and Roseate Spoonbills.
LOCATION: off Hwy 61, south of Natchez at Sibley, MS
Meet: at the Refuge HQ just past the Kiosk at 7:30, we will leave at 8:00
am.
Google Refuge for directions OR From Natchez GO south on Hwy 61 for 10
miles, then turn right onto York Rd at Sibley for 2 miles. Then turn left
onto Pintail Lane. HQ building is first building on your left.

PROGRAM: SUMMER & WINTER HUMMERS
SPEAKER: Fred Bassett, Hummingbird Bander. Fred is a certified master bird
bander who has worked with birds for over twenty years. Fred travels each
summer to study hummingbirds in western states and has done research in
Alaska and Canada. Fred has banded more than 35,000 hummingbirds in more
than 1,000 locations from Miami, Florida to Haines, Alaska. During the
winter he documents western hummingbirds wintering in south Alabama and
Florida, and the last fifteen winters he has captured more than 2,000
hummingbirds of ten different species in that area.
